Project Overview

Bechtel is the licensing, engineering, procurement, and construction partner on TerraPower’s Natrium team. Selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for its Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, Natrium is participating in a DOE initiative to re-establish U.S. leadership in nuclear energy that provides matching funding to industry to design and build an operational advanced reactor. TerraPower, a leading advanced generation technology company founded by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, will be deploying its 345 MWe sodium fast reactor (SFR), called Natrium. The Natrium plant features an advanced, cost-competitive reactor design that is safer, simpler, easier and less costly to construct, less expensive to operate, and able to provide energy that is competitive with fossil fuels. It also features an innovative molten salt energy storage system designed to be complementary to solar and wind power by evening out the peaks and valleys in production when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing. With the reactor and energy storage output combined, the plant can produce more than 500 MWe of power.

Position Summary

This position is for a Senior Systems Engineer (SE) to execute systems engineering activities including management, organization, and verification of complex design requirements, within a model-based systems engineering environment for the Natrium project. The SE plays a critical role in the delivery of the Requirements Management and Model-Based Systems Engineering program for Bechtel work products and designs, as well as for coordination of the scope and integration of work with internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, a can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs.  This role will report to the Nuclear/Systems Engineering EGS.

 

Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for executing systems engineering work assignments concerned with specialized unique engineering requirements for the Natrium project. This involves exploration of a subject area, the definition of scope, and may involve the development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in executing requirements management, model-based systems engineering, industrial process modeling, and design development experience producing design data/documents for power and/or government customers in accordance with project requirements. The candidate will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines, teaming partners and other stakeholders in the management and verification of the facility requirements. The position will be responsible for developing key systems engineering documents and must have a broad knowledge of the industry and regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to engineering and construction. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), can be the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, c
