The Principal Welding Engineer within Power & Controls Ops Technology is the welding subject matter expert within Power & Controls. This role is responsible for ensuring P&C welding best practices are incorporated into all P&C operations and for identifying, developing & deploying new advanced welding technologies to improve weld quality, productivity, including automation, and overall capability. This includes authoring and/or contributing to equipment specifications, participating in FAT, SAT, and site adoption efforts for capital equipment, new Welding and Joining processes or technology.
The Principal Welding Engineer is also expected to attend trade shows to stay up to date on the latest advances in equipment, processes, automation and technology in the discipline. The role is also considered an escalation path for critical weld processes and technologies throughout P&C operations & suppliers and provides both remote & on-site support for quality investigations, design for manufacturing & producibility reviews, special process audit preparation, and mentoring, coaching and training weld talent throughout the business. This role is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team within Ops Technology
Primary Responsibilities:
- Managing projects of welder and materials joining process installation, qualification, and procedure development for manufacturing
- Developing and qualifying welds with various metals
- Understand and provide guidance to operations in the area of process control methods and statistical process monitoring and understand the mechanics of non-destructive inspection with respect to Welding and Joining and related metallurgy.
- Participating in Collins-wide Welding and Joining COPs pertinent to the discipline, authoring and/or contributing to updates and revisions of P&C or Collins-wide Welding and Joining specifications, develop, collect, consolidate, and publishing Welding and Joining Endorsed Practices maintain & grow the network of weld process engineers & technicians throughout P&C with a strong focus on collaboration and sharing lessons learned.
- Network within Collins and across RTX to survey and benchmark best practices, technology, or equipment, participate in P&C, Collins or RTX technology symposiums, and participate in Collins-wide professional development programs as a technical mentor.
- Evaluate welds or materials using NDT and DT methods to analyze and improve process
- Troubleshooting and developing calibration requirements for weld equipment
- Evaluates potential solutions related to changes in equipment design, procedures, manpower, personnel, or training to ensure the most efficient sequence of operations and workflow
- Establishes and implements quality control objectives, activities or procedures to resolve production problems, optimize product reliability or minimize costs
- Reviews and provides analytical input to documents and operational procedures to support studies pertaining to cost control, production improvement, cost savings, inventory control and production record systems
- Provide expertise for vacuum, resistance, torch, hydrogen furnace and other brazing processes
Qualifications/Experiences Needed:
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
- U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required

Preferred Qualifications:
- Aerospace or Additive Manufacturing experience preferred
