Position Description:

The ELC implements a curriculum approach developed in Reggio Emilia Italy, which places a strong emphasis on art, drama, music and dance to enhance young children’s personal expression and an appreciation of beauty and culture. The Early Childhood Teacher I (Referred to as Atelierista for this specific role) plays an essential role in deepening children’s understandings of the world around them by offering art experiences rather than product-oriented crafts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Designs and implements a developmentally appropriate art, drama, music, and dance program for children ages six-weeks to five years with a focus on open-ended creation rather than product-oriented crafts.

• Provides weekly lesson plans that include hands-on experiences inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach using a large variety of media and natural materials.

• Works in classrooms each day, including child supervision (in ratio), care, and classroom maintenance tasks in collaboration with other team members

• Leads children in activities and projects to enhance their understanding and appreciation for classic and contemporary artists and composers, including a selection that reflects the cultures of enrolled families.

• Collaborates with the Director, Senior Lead and teaching staff to ensure ongoing, process-oriented experiences that emerge from the children’s interests.

• Works with teaching staff to collaboratively create and displays Reggio-inspired documentation, such as walls and online postings to reflect art, drama, music, and dance learning with clear connections to KY Early Childhood and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards. Seeks ways to engage families in art and music initiatives.

• Serves as supplemental teaching staff in classrooms as needed.

• Maintains a safe and sanitary environment for children. Adheres to KY Childcare Regulations, CACFP Food Program requirements, and ELC policies. Applies guidelines of NAEYC, including positive guidance techniques and the use of daily routines as teachable moments.

• Provides twice yearly professional development for staff members to enhance knowledge of Reggio art approaches.

• Conducts interactions in a professional and positive manner. Works cooperatively and courteously with co-workers and families.

• Reports reliably to work, arrives in a timely manner, and returns from breaks as scheduled. Maintains confidentiality at all times.

• Reports any concerns about safety and health issues and concerns about potential child abuse/neglect. Reports injuries, concerns about program or curriculum, or classroom needs to the

• Assures that all local, state, and confidentiality laws under HIPPA are being implemented. Completes a minimum of 15 hours of state-approved training annually and maintains current negative TB testing documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

• An Associate’s Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education and experience with the Reggio Emilia approach is preferred. Experience in teaching art, drama, music, or dance to young children is also preferred.

• The Atelierista is required to have a minimum of a Child Development Accreditation (CDA) and at least one year of experience working with children ages six-weeks to five-years.
