Job Summary:
The Department of Internal Medicine at Charles R. Drew University is seeking a highly motivated individual who aims to pursue a career in academic medicine. This is a one-year position starting July 1st. The Internal Medicine Chief Resident will provide program-level administrative support and assist with the residency program mission to address the needs of the urban underserved communities and community partners served by the university. The Internal Medicine Chief Resident will work with the Program Director, Associate Program Directors, Internal Medicine Faculty, Residents, and Internal Medicine Program Administrator as a member of the residency leadership team. This position will include on-the-job training in administrative skills, clinical teaching and supervision, research, and publication.
The Charles R. Drew University Internal Medicine Program was established on July 1st, 2021. Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is a private non-profit, student-centered University that is committed to cultivating diverse health professional leaders who are dedicated to social justice and health equity for underserved populations through outstanding education, research, clinical service, and community engagement. The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program's mission is to develop compassionate, well-rounded, culturally competent internists dedicated to serving the needs of the underserved and special populations. This shall be accomplished by training individuals who have shown compassion and readiness to serve indigent patients, education in available community services and resources, education in public policies, and an improved understanding of health care disparities. Much clinical experience will be based at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital (VLBHS). VLBHS provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, and extended care programs. It employs more than 2,200 full-time employees and is the healthcare provider of choice for more than 50,000 Veterans.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
ADMINISTRATION (approximately 50% of the time)
- Assist program director with Internal Medicine Program day-to-day activities
- Assist in troubleshooting issues regarding individual resident and programmatic issues
- Assist in planning and running resident wellness events
- Assist in revising the Residency Manual/Policies and Procedures for the following year.
- Assist in running resident-only and resident/faculty meetings.
- Supervise and assist in the organization of the resident VA and Charles R. Drew rotation schedules, including troubleshooting conflicts regarding clinical coverage.
- Assist with weekly didactic schedule, including resident, faculty, and guest lecturers
- Coordination of resident involvement in residency working groups and community activities.
- Participate in required meetings, including Clinical Competency Committee and Program Evaluation Committee
- Assist in the coordination, planning, and implementation of community service/outreach projects
- Assist with the recruitment process
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Internal Medicine Program Director
TEACHING & SUPERVISION (approximately 25% of the time)
- Work with faculty and administration in designing and implementing curriculums and rotations
- Work with junior residents to assure smooth transitions and support their developing skills
- Work as a Junior attending onwards and outpatient clinics
- Provide presentations at didactics for medical students and residents
- Participate in faculty development activities
- Serve as a role model and guide for other residents in their professional interactions with patients, families, staff, and colleagues
SCHOLARSHIP/RESEARCH (approximately 25% of the time)
- Help lead residents in QI projects
- Work on scholarly projects tailored to individual interests and goals
- Participate in faculty development
- Assist with Quality and Safety programs to learn systems-based practice and process improvement
- Possible participation in scholarly activities, including research division participation, quality improvement projects, health policy work
- Possible opportunities to mentor scholarly projects for local, regional, or national conferences
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
EDUCATION:
