Special Education Teacher (Mild/Moderate)

Job Description

 

Reports To:        Special Education Program Specialist (or designee)

FLSA Status: Exempt

School Classification: Certificated

Pay Schedule: Range 7: $78,053 - $97,756
*Newly hired teachers are eligible for up to 10 years of service credit (up to Step K)

Work Schedule: 190 days/11 months

Location: Onsite and Remote Office  

 

Position Summary:  The special education teacher provides instruction at the elementary, middle, high school and/or adult transition level to students who require remedial and specialized assistance in pre-academic, academic, social emotional, behavioral, adaptive behavior, daily living, pre-vocational, college and career skill areas;  and plans, develops, organizes and implements comprehensive individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with a variety of disabilities. School staff will rely on the special education teacher to provide consultation and educational services within the area of special education.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Completes thorough initial evaluations, additional assessments, and reevaluations in alignment with state and federal guidelines as well as department guidelines, and develops legally compliant IEPs and assessment reports
  2. Conducts educational assessments related to students’ access to the academic core curriculum and progress towards meeting instructional academic goals
  3. Provides appropriate instruction both individually and in small groups and other special education supports to students whose needs have been identified in an IEP and others requested by a special education administrator
  4. Develops, schedules, leads, and participates in the IEP meetings 
  5. Consults with various school staff members, parents, outside service providers regarding student assessments, specialized instruction, accommodations and modifications, and behavior management techniques; coordinates IEP services as needed
  6. Maintains records and reports, and completes frequent progress monitoring that is required by the school, state, and/or federal regulations
  7. Develops positive relationships and rapport with all staff members
  8. Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with all other school personnel and parents while maintaining confidentiality at all times
  9. Participates in staff and program development related to the special methods and approaches of providing special education services
  10. Provides direct oversight for paraprofessionals as the credentialed teacher
  11. Attends and actively participates in regional meetings
  12. Provides services to students in public location and/or in-home, if necessary
  13. Proctoring duties as needed during the testing season

 

Other Duties:

  1. Responds to all school related communication within 24 business hours
  2. Documents and refers to the school’s management all formal disciplinary actions involving students; supporting management with addressing and resolving complaints from students and parents in a timely manner; ensuring compliance with the provisions of California Penal Code Section 11166 (Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act)
  3. Performs other duties as assigned
