About the role

As a Senior Software Backend Engineer, working on the Platform Engineering team, you will participate in driving the architecture and implementation of the next generation of developer tools and platforms. This platform enables software developers across Zillow Group (ZG) to quickly build and maintain products. Our work has a significant impact in support of Zillow's mission to build the most trusted home-related marketplace in the world!

As a Senior Software Engineer You Will Get To:

• Think about systems — their edge cases, failure modes, and lifecycles

• Work with leadership to drive the technical strategy and roadmap for the adoption of new tools and standards on ZG's platforms

• Identify cultural and process improvement opportunities and find ways to improve them

• Set the standard of technical excellence and mentor other engineers

• Establish relationships with senior leadership and help drive strategy

• Collaborate and optimally works cross-functionally teams comprising of business partners, engineers, and product management to produce the best solutions possible

• Be a champion of the Platform team, and helps gain adoption across the various teams at Zillow Group

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live in any of the 50 US States, with limited exceptions. In certain cases, an employee in a remote-designated job may need to live in a specific region or time zone to support customers or clients as part of their role.

In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York and Washington the standard base pay range for this role is $156,300.00 - $249,700.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York and Washington and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

• 5+ years experience in leading the design and development of highly available systems at scale.

• Bachelor’s degree or higher (or 5+ years of experience).

• A consistent track record as a multi-functional technical leader.

• High efficiency and quality in software design, development, testing, and debugging issues across the whole stack

• Programming languages like Golang and Python, or Java, JavaScript/Node.js

• Cloud technologies and providers like AWS, GCP, or Azure.

• Hands-on Kubernetes experience building, configuring and operating clusters.

• Experience with opensource tooling in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) ecosystem tooling like Istio, Prometheus, etc.

• Familiarity with containerization and container orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes as well as concepts like service discovery and solutions like service meshes.

• End to end understanding of REST and microservices architecture.

• Infrastructure automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions like Terraform, Ansible, etc.

• Capable of designing observability and reliability monitoring using tools such as Nagios, Zabbix, Splunk, SumoLogic, Prometheus, New Relic, DataDog, etc.
