JOB SUMMARY AND SCOPE

Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, is responsible for management of the Surgical Services Department. Directs services of age appropriate activities and makes immediate administrative decisions within the scope of his/her responsibility utilizing standards of care and policies and procedures. May perform other duties that are relevant to the position and department, as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer. Maintains a high degree of confidentiality and supports the mission, vision, and values of the organization. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Manages nursing care given within the surgical suite according to nursing principles
  • Manages all staff to ensure quality of nursing care
  • Formulating schedule which provides staff available for all procedures
  • Assigns personnel and delegates specific duties and tasks
  • Manages problem areas in patient care delivery
  • Identifies problem areas, encourages staff input and makes recommendations for resolution
  • Reports issues to the Chief Nursing Officer as appropriate
  • Supervises Surgery Suite to ensure cleanliness, sterility and operational ability of all items
  • Evaluates need for new or updated items in regard to present and new trends or needs of the department
  • Develops, revises and implements department policies and procedures
  • Formulates the department budget
  • Exercises cost containment practices and educates the staff in such practices
  • Demonstrates decision-making skills by establishing priorities and initiating action
  • Gives input to the evaluation process
  • Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self motivated. Completes projects by due date

COMMUNICATIVE

  • Establishes and maintains open communication with nursing staff, physicians, other disciplines and ancillary personnel
  • Communicates job expectations clearly
  • Seeks out needed information by staying informed and involved by attending meetings, reading memos, policies, meeting minutes, newsletters, email and other appropriate information in a timely manner.
  • Maintains appropriate communication networks
  • Coordinates department staff meetings and attends management meetings as scheduled
  • Participates in maintaining a professional practice environment through active committee membership

PROFESSIONAL & EDUCATIVE

  • Identifies and participates in appropriate education programs to develop clinical and managerial expertise
  • Acts as a role model to promote continuing education
  • Assists in education and orientation of new staff members
  • Reads current nursing literature and shares learning with staff
  • Develops best practices focusing on patient safety and satisfaction goals
  • Maintains competency in professional practice by completion of 100% of annual competency program and departmental educational bucket list
  • Sets goals for performance annually
  • Acknowledges input/feedback on performance from peers, staff and Chief Nursing Officer

GENERAL

  • Adheres to the organizational leadership profile.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Performs duties in a safe manner, in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with the Code of Conduct and all appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Other duties, as assigned, that are relevant to the position and department.


Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current registered nurse licensure in the state of Maine
  • Basic Life Support Certification required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification required: (may obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification required: (may obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • At least 3 years perioperative experience
  • Advanced Computer Skills
  • CNOR preferred
  • Demonstrates clinical proficiency in the age appropriate care of patients using the nursing process
  • Demonstrates leadership skills with strengths in communications, organization, management of conflict and problem solving
  • Ability to function independently
  • Ability to act rapidly and efficiently in emergency situations

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT

Clinical: Frequently lifts up to 35 pounds independently. Frequently pushes/pulls 100 pounds using mechanical and other assistive devices. Walks, stands, kneels, bends most of the time. Exhibits fine motor skills and manual dexterity necessary to perform the essential job functions of the position.
