SENIOR COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT) TECHNOLOGIST

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing technical and quality assurance functions associated with Computed Tomography
(CT) procedures at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent supervises staff, prepares patients, equipment and supplies following exam protocols, performs procedures, processes images and participates in quality assurance testing as required by regulations. This position differs from that of Computed Tomography Technologist by virtue of the supervisory responsibilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Imaging Services. Supervision is exercised over CT technologists, lower-level technical staff and ancillary staff. Does related work as required.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises staff in CT, including assigning daily responsibilities, scheduling, posting and assigning overtime, training and orientation, reviewing work, completing competency assessments and evaluations;
Performs venous injection for the administration of contrast pharmaceuticals in accordance with departmental policies and procedures;
Administers ionizing radiation;
Prepares and positions patients for imaging;
Performs or assists with CT procedures;
Reviews images for accuracy and quality;
Processes and prepares images for interpretation and report distribution/archive;
Establishes, implements and maintains CT policies, procedures and protocols; develops such with input from Radiologists;
Performs or manages mandated regulatory compliance tasks and quality control in accordance with state, local, federal and accrediting agencies; coordinates Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement for CT function;
Inspects and keeps images, computer/digital, electronic transfer, processing and ancillary equipment in safe working order to ensure proper and safe performance before patient procedures are initiated;
Works with applicable personnel to ensure equipment maintenance is performed timely and correctly;
Schedules and/or prioritizes procedures; coordinates the scheduling and care of patients with other departments;
Ensures a safe environment for external and internal customers; performs visual maintenance checks and quality control tests for equipment;
Performs education and health teaching for CT patients;
Meets with vendors to discuss existing and new products; provides related education/training to co-workers;
Reviews adverse drug reactions and extravasations daily logs;
Orders, maintains and tracks inventory;
Participates in new technology/product in-services, training programs and meetings and participates in hospital or department meetings, committees or initiatives.


FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of Computed Tomography (CT) and CT safety; through knowledge of anatomical positioning; good knowledge of physiology; good knowledge of radiation safety and contrast safety; good knowledge of CT imaging procedures; good knowledge of contrast contra-indications; good knowledge of regulatory and accrediting agency compliance and quality assurance activities; good knowledge of Hospital Information Systems (HIS)/Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Picture Archive and Communication Systems (PACS); good knowledge of sterile technique; skill in the operation of imaging, ancillary and processing equipment; ability to administer radiation for diagnostic purposes; ability to produce high-quality CT images; ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to supervise others; ability to develop and revise employee work schedules; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; sound professional judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited school of Radiologic Technology and three (3) years of experience as Computed Tomography (CT) Technologist.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a current license to practice as a Radiologic Technologist issued by New York State Department of
Health at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment;
Possession of certification to administer contrast media intravenously issued by New York State Department of Health, in accordance with New York Codes, Rules and Regulations, Title 10, Part 89.40, at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment;
Possession of Computed Tomography (CT) certification issued by American Registry of Radiologic Technologist
