The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The person hired for the position of Category Captain will work to deliver the most relevant consumer insights, competitive insights, category data analysis, shelving, assortment and merchandising recommendations to Target in order to support business strategies & tactics outlined by the buying and merchandising teams.
As a Category Captain, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Delivering weekly category performance reporting and key insights to buyer partners.
- Developing and growing relationships across functional areas at Target to support and expand the category.
- Supporting Target category buyer(s) during line reviews and planogram resets, by owning all aspects of planogram development projects, driving and supporting the core line review process, new item recommendations, store clustering, on-shelf merchandising, POG creation, Item Matrices.
- Using Target POS, ProSpace, and other data tools to build custom analyses and develop efficient item optimizations for the stores on both an everyday and seasonal basis.
- Providing ongoing independent analysis of the competitive marketplace related to category trends, current and new products within category.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or related field (completed and verified prior to start)
- Five (5) years of experience in category management, retail sales, analytics or merchandising in a private, public, government or military environment, with specific experience working with Target preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) and category management tools (e.g; Circana, Numerator, ProSpace).
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Master's degree in Business Administration from an accredited institution
- Experience with retail POS systems, especially with Target.
- Proven experience in managing and growing product categories with a deep understanding of Target’s business processes, strategies, and retail environment.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret sales data, consumer panel data, and other information to develop actionable insights.
- Proven communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
Work location:
- Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work but require travel to Minneapolis location at least 3 days per week)
Travel: May include up to 5% domestic
Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).
