A Brief Overview
The Lead Mammographer oversees daily operations of the mammography unit, ensuring high-quality imaging services, regulatory compliance, and team coordination under direction of physician. This role combines clinical expertise with leadership responsibilities, including mentoring staff, managing daily workflow, and maintaining equipment standards.
Education Qualifications
- 40 hours of documented training in topics specific to mammography, FDA 900.12(a)(2)(ii), and 15 CEU credits specific to mammography in the last 36 month period, according to FDA 900.12(a)(2)(iii) and (iv). Required or
- Registered Radiologic Technologist Required
- Licensed Radiology Technologist (LRT) - KSBHA

Licenses and Certifications
- Radiography - ARRT Required
- Licensed Radiology Technologist (LRT) - KSBHA Required
- Mammography - ARRT Preferred
- Basic Life Support - BLS Required within 90 days of hire.
What you will do
- Moves imaging equipment into specified position, determines exposure factors on basis of height, weight, portion of body involved, and degree of penetration required, and adjusts equipment controls to set exposure factors and produce images of proper detail, density, and accuracy.
- Prepares and positions patient for diagnostic imaging procedures. Adjusts immobilization devices to obtain optimum views of specified area of body requested by physician.
- Practices radiation protection techniques to minimize radiation to patient and staff. Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgement, with ingenuity and initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis.
- Performs screening and diagnostic mammography on women and men in accordance with the American College of Radiology guidelines.
- Performs quality control, routine maintenance, diagnoses malfunctions, and makes minor repairs on radiologic equipment, arranging for repairs as needed.
- Patient education, scheduling and screening calls for mammograms, obtaining outside films for comparison, monitoring of patient rooms for supplies and stocking.
- Coordinates schedules and daily workflow to optimize patient care and department efficiency.
- Serve as a liaison between mammography staff and management, resolving operational issues and ensuring compliance with polcies and ACR/FDA guidelines.
- Coordinates the flow of patients in order to keep waiting time to a minimum and expedite patients as needed
- Provide input in the hiring, onboarding, counseling and disciplining of staff.
- Maintains documentation for ACR and MQSA at both Manhattan Campus and Flint Hills Campus locations.
- Ensures proper documentation and compliance with mammographers are meeting guidelines for ACR and MQSA.
- Stays current on mammography guidelines and changes.
- Explains procedures to patient to reduce anxieties and obtain patient cooperation.
- Processes images and reviews for proper identification and quality control.
- Completes forms and maintains records, logs, and reports of work performed.
- Prepares images for reading by radiologist or requesting physician.
- Assists radiologist in examinations.
- Performs office work including, but not limited to, answering phone, filing, obtaining information from computer, and ordering departmental supplies.
