Here at ExpressVPN we operate over 3,000 servers at 160 VPN locations in 94 countries! Capacity Planning Engineer

Responsibilities

As a Capacity Planning Engineer in our Operations Infrastructure team, you will be responsible for:

• Analyzing capacity needs to operate our services and planning/executing to meet those requirements
• Analyzing, reporting, optimizing, and managing operational expenditures within our operational budget
• Managing and negotiating contracts with providers of data centers, hardware, IP addresses, ISP connections, peering links, payment gateways, and more
• Leveraging our purchasing power and economies of scale to get the best possible prices and drive down the total cost of ownership and operational costs
• Defining and enforcing the service quality for all types of providers we work with, evaluating them against our definitions, and selecting the best providers that meet our standards.  When we look for quality, we look for the quality of connectivity, security rating, reliability rate of incidents, and the quality of customer service.
• Maintaining an always up-to-date inventory of all infrastructure resources we own or lease, as well as all associated contracts
• Staying within acceptable risk levels as defined in our data center, infrastructure provider, and server security risk categorization system
• Being aware of and documenting market players, pricing, and influences to ensure our services remain competitive with the best mix of quality and cost
• Managing vendor relationships to ensure vendors have a positive experience partnering with ExpressVPN
• Mentoring junior Capacity Planners and ensuring they have the knowledge and tools to be successful
• Working with our Finance department to reconcile payments to vendors, and validating our spending as needed

 

To succeed in this role, we’d love for you to have experience in some or all of the following: 

• A background in one or more of the following areas:
  • Data center procurement, capacity planning, or capacity engineering
  • IT purchasing, contracts management, or similar
• Intermediate to advanced-level knowledge of:
  • Procurement of technical services and hardware
  • Contract negotiation
  • Vendor management
  • Planning, scheduling, and coordinating hardware upgrades, rollouts, and replacements
  • Data manipulation and basic data analysis
  • Project management
• A background or knowledge of the datacenter industry, especially when it comes to colocation and hardware leasing
• Knowledge of procurement of services such as ISPs, ISP peering, bandwidth, payment gateways, and IP addresses
• The ability to lead or effectively work on infrastructure project teams
• An understanding of financial modeling, predictions, and similar methodologies
• Understanding metrics and reports
• Documenting processes and following procedures
• Strong verbal communications in English
• Good writing/documentation skills in English
