Nephrology- Section Chief/ Medical Director, Kidney Transplant

Summary of Position

The Lewis Katz School of Medicine is seeking an accomplished and dynamic physician leader to serve as the Section Chief of Nephrology/Medical Director Kidney Transplant Program within the Department of Medicine. This leadership role will involve fostering a collaborative, innovative, and academically rigorous environment, with a strong emphasis on clinical excellence, research, and education. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with medical professionals, health system leadership , and clinical research teams to enhance patient care and clinical outcomes. It is preferred that the new Chief has experience in medical nephrology and transplant medicine.

 

The individual in this position will lead a team of nephrologists, collaborate with other medical and administrative departments, and ensure the highest standards of patient care, education, and scholarly work in the field of nephrology. The Section Chief will provide clinical guidance, mentorship to faculty, fellows, and residents, and foster an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement. This role requires strong leadership, expertise in nephrology and kidney transplant, and the ability to engage with academic, clinical, and research communities effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Management• Represent the Nephrology/Kidney Transplant section in departmental, institutional, and external meetings, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and initiatives and manage the section’s budget and resources, ensuring efficient allocation and compliance with institutional financial goals.• Provide senior clinical leadership for the Nephrology/Kidney Transplant Section, fostering a culture of academic excellence and clinical innovation.• Develop and implement strategic goals aligned with LKSOM and the Department of Medicine. • Provide medical leadership in the evaluation, management, and follow-up of kidney transplant recipients and living donors. • Work with surgical teams, transplant coordinators, and nursing staff to ensure coordinated care across the transplant continuum. • Provide oversight and management to dialysis units and related services, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. • Oversee recruitment, retention, mentoring, and career development of faculty, fellows, and staff that fosters a diverse and inclusive environment within the section.• Oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and financial sustainability of the division.• Ensure adherence to healthcare regulations, coding compliance, and quality assurance standards • Lead efforts to expand the transplant program through outreach, increasing the number of transplant candidates, and enhancing service offerings.

 

Clinical Care• Oversee Nephrology Services: Manage inpatient and outpatient nephrology services, ensuring high-quality patient care across multiple facilities.• Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction metrics to identify areas for improvement and, along with the Department’s Vice Chair of Quality, Safety and Innovation, oversee quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care, safety, and outcomes.

 

ResearchThe Section Chief and faculty are members of the Center for Urban Health and Population Science at Temple University Hospital. The Center for Urban Health and Population Science strives to conduct cutting-edge research that generates evidence-based solutions to improve health outcomes and enhance the overall quality of life in urban populations with complex structural determinants of health. The Section Chief/Medical Director will:• Promote and support research activities, including basic, translational, and clinical research within the section.• Encourage faculty to secure research funding• Engage in and promote clinical research related to nephrology and kidney transplantation, including outcomes research and pharmacological studies.

 

EducationThe Chief/Medical Director is tasked with driving the achievement of quality and educational objectives, actively participating in faculty development, and mentoring medical students and post-graduate trainees. The Section Chief of Nephrology will:
