POSITION SPECIFICS

The Smeal College of Business seeks an experienced Academic Adviser to work in a fast-paced, high-energy academic environment.  Extensive knowledge of university policy and procedures that apply to the matriculation and the academic, personal, and professional development of undergraduate students is required.  For full consideration, applicants must submit a resume/CV and cover letter with their application.

Key responsibilities of this individual include:

  • Implement major exploration strategy for all Smeal students across the University in collaboration with Smeal departments, First-Year Seminar, Smeal student organizations, Smeal Ethical Leadership Challenge, Undergraduate Advising, Business Career Center and other units

  • Coordinate with Smeal departments and faculty to plan and deliver Smeal major exploration events throughout the academic year

  • Serve as a resource for academic advisers and students

  • Provide academic advising to undergraduate students; guiding students in course selection and scheduling; resolve academic problems; monitor degree progress

  • Assess student needs and make professional referrals

  • Interpret university policies, procedures and curriculum to students and faculty in the college

  • Contribute to advising committees and/or working groups related to areas that may include student success, diversity and inclusion, assessment and evaluation, academic policies and/or staff development

Additionally, other duties include meeting with prospective students and families and participating in various college programs such as Accepted Student Events, New Student Orientation, Spend A Summer Day, and other programs as assigned.  This position requires interaction with students, parents, faculty, and various college staff members and may require occasional weekend and evening hours.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Master’s degree plus a minimum of six years of relevant experience in advising, admissions or other student related roles, or an equivalent combination of education and experience  

  • A strong background in academic advising with a proven track record
