Summary

What You'll Do:

• Maintain the airfield and report/correct problems to ensure safe operation of the airport.
• Meets with airport users, contractors, other agencies, and members of the public to resolve questions and complaints relating to airport operations.
• Schedules, directs, supervises, trains and reviews the work of airport operations staff including airport service workers, custodial and maintenance workers.
• Operate and maintain a variety of vehicles and equipment including trucks, power and hand tools.
• Provide emergency response, including aircraft rescue and fire fighting.

Where You'll Do It:
This position will be located in McKinleyville, California at the California Redwood Coast Humboldt County Airport (ACV). The County also manages five other airports throughout the County and employees will regularly use a county vehicle to travel to these airports to perform similar work.

Current schedules include 10-hour day or night shifts and includes working on holidays and weekends. Schedules my change dependent upon the needs of the organization.

There are several additional pay incentives for this classification including: an annual uniform allowance, on-call incentive pay, and shift differential incentive pay.

DEFINITION

Under direction, assigns, directs, and supervises the work of airport operations personnel; works alone or with other staff to perform more difficult maintenance and repairs; performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 
This is the first supervisory level in the airport service worker series, with responsibility for providing direction to a small staff of Airport Service Workers and other airport operations staff in addition to performing similar work. This class is distinguished from Airport Operations Supervisor who has responsibility for planning activities for airport operations and assisting the Airport Manager in the overall work of the aviation division.

Examples of duties

• Schedules, directs, supervises, trains and reviews the work of airport operations staff including airport service workers, custodial and maintenance workers.
• Assists in interviewing, selecting and evaluating staff.
• Performs routine to moderately complex repairs and maintenance on airport facilities, vehicles and equipment; arranges to contract out more difficult repairs when necessary.
• Develops a training schedule for staff and ensures that staff maintains required certifications; coordinates training activities with administrative staff.
• Assists in planning routine maintenance for airport facilities, grounds, buildings and equipment.
• Meets with airport users, contractors, other agencies, and members of the public to resolve questions and complaints relating to airport operations.
• Assists aircraft operators in parking and tie down activities; fuels aircraft and collects and records fees.
• Recommends ordering supplies and equipment and monitors inventory levels.
• Ensures that airport security is maintained in accordance with federal regulations and departmental policy.
• Maintains a variety of logs, reports, and other written records.
• Maintains current knowledge of Federal, State and local regulations relating to airport operations.
• Assists in collecting information needed for purchasing supplies and equipment and for the budget process; makes recommendations concerning purchases.
• Provides emergency services by operating fire fighting equipment and extinguishing aircraft fires.
• May be required to take and report weather observations.
• May act in the absence of the Airport Operations Supervisor.
