POSITION SUMMARY:
Supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Builds members’ and the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact. To assist with the development, organization, implementation and delivery of high-quality climbing wall programs. Leads or assists with climbing classes, and open climbs, in a safe, enjoyable, culturally aware and positive environment that promotes youth development, social responsibility, and healthy living in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures with advocacy for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- 1. Builds personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests. While exemplifying the Y’s commitment to DEI and the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility and responds to all member and community inquiries in a timely manner.
- 2. Leads or assists with energizing, fun, culturally aware, safe, open climbs, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
- 3. Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
- 4. Builds effective, culturally aware, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA using a DEI lens.
- 5. Provide direct supervision and instruction to climbing participants in accordance with the YMCA Best practices, and policies and procedures.
- 6. Conveys program information, surveys, and annual campaign to participants.
- 7. Follows all YMCA emergency and safety procedures.
- 8. Participates in staff meetings, training, events, reviews, and other scheduled events.
- 9. Set-up and maintain class equipment use and configuration and be accountable for housekeeping
- 10. Arrives early to class to provide a 10-minute set up time for all class. Be punctual and dependable.
- 11. Upholds all YMCA policies, procedures, standards, and code of conduct.
- 12. Project a positive, enthusiastic, and professional image on the job.
- 13. Be self-motivated and can work independently or as a team member.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Meets 80% to 100% of the following qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Ability to perform duties with professionalism, enthusiasm, kindness, empathy, care, honesty, and respect.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with class participants, superiors, and co-workers.
- Must be able to implement oral and written instructions.
- Exercises mature judgment and sound decision making.
- Must work very well in a team environment and be physically able to move climbing equipment.
- Must have basic belay knowledge and proper use of climbing equipment.
- Willingness to learn additional areas in the climbing department.
PREFERED LEVEL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have at least 5+ years' experience with climbing
- Must be belayed certified using ATC and GRIGRI devices.
- Working knowledge and experience with climbing harnesses, ropes, belay devices, carabineers and other related climbing apparatus required.
- Must have a fundamental knowledge of climbing skills and the ability to demonstrate belay techniques.
- Must have knowledge of proper use of climbing equipment.
- A certificate in DEI or extensive training and work experience.
