Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a qualified individual to serve as Regional Supervisor in the Office of Meat and Poultry, Division of Animal & Food Industry Services. This position is assigned to the Southeastern Region and the successful candidate will be required to live in or convenient to the New Kent and Southampton Counties. The Southeastern Region includes the following areas of coverage: Powhatan, Amelia, Chesterfield, Petersburg, Mechanicsville, New Kent, Newport News, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk. The area of coverage is subject to change based on Agency needs. Duties include but not limited to: Enforcement of a comprehensive system of inspection laws and regulations designed to provide and maintain a safe, unadulterated, wholesome and accurately labeled meat and poultry supply. Provide training, guidance and technical assistance to develop and maintain inspector performance. Provide technical assistance to establishments; relief for inspectors on all shifts including evenings, nights and weekends, and supervisors when necessary and reviewing inspected and exempt facilities to ensure conformity with regulation. Provide first line supervision to meat & poultry inspectors; reviewing inspector’s performance and knowledge of HACCP, SSOP, SPS, PHIS, establishment recalls and noncompliance record documentation. Monitor sampling programs to ensure compliance. Additional duties include; conducting performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, hiring, and scheduling, approve and managing leave request. This position is home based with considerable travel and overnight stays. A state vehicle is assigned to the selected candidate for business use only.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of meat and poultry regulations, slaughter and processing procedures, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), SSOP, SPS, sampling, and labeling. Strong administrative, oral and written communication and managerial skills is desired. Ability to interpret and apply agency policy and requirements; meat and poultry regulations, directives, and notices; labeling requirements, sampling for raw and cooked products, to ensure all products are unadulterated, wholesome, and accurately labeled; to evaluate noncompliance records and Public Health Information System (PHIS) data for accuracy and completion and provide constructive feedback to inspection manager and inspection team; to plan and organize work and supervise the work of others; to work both independently and in a team environment; to make independent decisions and take appropriate actions in extreme circumstance or environment and to be self-motivated. Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external clients and to effectively respond to emails and phone calls from inspection team in a timely manner. Additionally, the successful candidate must have the ability to professionally interact with agency management and field staff, the public, the meat and poultry industry and other regulatory agencies and to make independent technical decisions on points of meat and poultry law and regulations.
Additional Considerations
Experience with formal supervisory duties such as hiring, evaluating, disciplining, and scheduling the work of subordinate employees. Proficiency with standard business computer applications.
