The Associate Director, Academic Finance & Administration (AD) will be the lead administrator for the academic missions of the Division of Cardiology & Division of Clinical Pharmacology (the Divisions). With delegated authority from the Division Administrator & Director, Finance & Administration, the AD will represent the Divisions for academic finance & administrative affairs to DOM, Duke Centers/ Institutes where the Divisions’ faculty perform academic activity, externally to institutions where faculty may have collaborations, and provide overall operational, strategic, and financial leadership for the academic affairs of the Divisions of Cardiology and Clinical Pharmacology.
The AD will provide the highest level of customer service in support of all cardiology and clinical pharmacology faculty & staff in navigating and managing academic finance, effort, and discretionary funding activities, among others. The AD is expected to be responsive, engaged, and proactive in identifying issues, mitigating financial risk to the Divisions, and providing sound guidance to both the faculty and Division leadership on matters related to academic finance and administrative affairs. The AD will be a key thought partner to the Director, as well as the primary division administrative dyad partner to the Vice Chief for Research and Vice Chief for Education.
In addition, the AD will partner with the Executive Director of the Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC), in overseeing the grant portfolio, including space efficiency in coordination with central DOM research administration, faculty funding, and long-range strategic financial & operational planning for the CVRC, including the physiology core.
The AD will work in close collaboration with other administrative leaders in the Division to independently and jointly oversee the routine operations of the Division and its faculty across missions. The AD will actively seek opportunities to coach and mentor staff within the Division. Finally, a keen eye toward the development and implementation of inclusive and equitable financial practices is paramount.
Occupational Summary
Plan, develop and coordinate the preparation of financial analyses and reports including, but not limited to, operational and capital budgets, financial statements, statistical reports, cost analyses and other financial information; perform complex and specialized assignments in assigned area of expertise; perform lead role in coordinating complex projects.
Work Performed

- Work in partnership with the VC Research on short-term and long-term planning/program development of the research portfolio of the Division.
- Work in partnership with the VC Education and Education Coordinator on short-term and long-term financial planning for all education programs, including ensuring appropriate fellow funding distribution.
- Faculty effort- oversee and ensure appropriate faculty effort allocation, including total professional effort, VA 8ths, annual effort certification process, etc., working in conjunction with the clinical administrator for clinical effort, and departmental effort coordinator. Develop & implement processes where needed. This is require frequent interactions and review discussions directly with faculty. <
