​Staff Engineer – Database Platform

Position Summary  

​​GEICO is seeking an experienced Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime database platforms, and applications.  You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while creating a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.​ 

Position Description 

Our Sr. Staff Engineer works with our Staff Engineers and Sr. Engineers to innovate and build new systems, improve and enhance existing systems.  You will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the velocity of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in the database platform domain, specifically Cassandra.  

Position Responsibilities 

​​As a Sr. Staff Engineer, you will: 

• ​Collaborate with managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve our toughest problems 

• ​Develop and execute technical software development strategy for our database platform services 

• ​Utilize Python and Golang 

• ​Be very familiar with relational and non-relational databases. For this role, expert knowledge of Cassandra is required.   

• ​Have a deep understanding of container orchestration including Docker and Kubernetes and have experience implementing database workloads in containers. 

• ​Be a role model and mentor, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering community.  

• ​Influence and educate leadership at all levels  

• ​Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
