PROPULSION SYSTEMS TEST ENGINEER (DRAGON )

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate ground and spacecraft fluids systems as an on-console test engineer
  • Lead hazardous operations including work with high pressures and hypergolic propellants
  • Process ownership of one or more of the following: engine inspections, engine removal, decon, install, propulsion system checkouts, closeouts, component R&R, or GSE
  • Run vehicle system level checkouts as a test conductor on console for flown capsules
  • Develop and refine inspection, repair/retrofit, assembly and system test procedures based on lessons learned for maximum efficiency
  • Maintain operational readiness of all systems supporting Dragon spacecraft ground operations
  • Develop, maintain, and execute procedures for the integration and test of crew/cargo Dragon flight hardware as well as ground support equipment
  • Work with and assist skilled technician workforce to carry out integrated system build, operation, and maintenance
  • Develop and test automation to improve the efficiency and reliability of spacecraft operations
  • Design new systems and improve existing ones to support vehicle processing requirements
  • Select components, such as DAQ, instrumentation, valves, pumps, piping, tanks, and filters, and provide specifications for their purchase
  • Provide innovative solutions to problems while working with minimal supervision
  • Responsible for enabling day-to-day execution of the vehicle maintenance, propellant system checkouts and avionics test flow
  • Manage and track multiple priorities while maintaining a focus towards common project goals

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, physics, aerospace engineering, or other engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of experience with pressure systems operations or multi-disciplinary system assemblies

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working on pressurized system operations on console
  • Experience with spacecraft or launch vehicles or other highly complicated systems
  • Experience working with hypergols or other hazardous chemicals
  • Experience in writing test plans and test procedures
  • Proficiency in or hands-on experience with one or more of the following:  launch vehicle or spacecraft integration; operations in 100,000 class or better clean rooms; test operations with gases/fluids; and data acquisition setup and field measurements
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • A positive, upbeat attitude and ability to perform work expectations and thrive in a high-stress environment
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate clearly and accurately with a wide range of people

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
  • Willing to work in clean room environment
  • Physical effort including standing, lifting and carrying moderately heavy materials or equipment (15 to 35 lbs.)
  • Comfortable being trained to work around hypergolic propellants (MMH and NTO) and willing to work with hazardous materials
  • Overall mental fitness with the ability to work in a high-concentration, high-stress environment requiring prolonged mental concentration (under possible extended work hours)
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Schedules vary due to site operational needs, and night/weekend shift rotations are often necessary – flexibility is required

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range: 

Propulsion Systems Test Engineer (Dragon)/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00/per year

Propulsion Systems Test Engineer (Dragon)/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00/per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
