The Utility Maintenance Apprentice role is an active position aimed at aiding the Utility Maintenance team in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing crucial equipment within a pharmaceutical manufacturing setting. Working under the supervision or guidance of experienced technicians and engineers, the apprentice gains expertise in ensuring the dependable operation of utilities such as HVAC, water purification, compressed air, steam, and other vital systems required for pharmaceutical production. This apprenticeship program offers thorough training and skill enhancement in technical areas vital to Utility Operations in the biotech pharmaceutical industry.

Job Description

What You’ll Do

 

  • Provides support to the maintenance team with servicing and repairing utility systems, including HVAC, boilers, chillers, water systems, and compressed air systems to ensure minimal downtime
  • Supports the Utility Operations team with wastewater testing, treatment, and bulk chemical offloading
  • Learns to identify and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues in facility utilities to maintain operational efficiency
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks, under supervision
  • Learns to use diagnostic tools, works with maintenance schedules, and retains accurate maintenance records
  • Works in alignment with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and safety regulations, and learns the importance of clean environments and strict protocols in a pharmaceutical setting
  • Assists with logging and maintaining maintenance activities and completing required reports while gaining experience with industry-standard and company documentation practices
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, and Quality teams to understand the interdependencies of facility maintenance in pharmaceutical manufacturing production
  • Participates in on-the-job training, technical workshops, or other relevant certification programs to expand skills in facility maintenance, troubleshooting, and regulatory compliance
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

Knowledge & Skills

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical systems, HVAC, and/or building automation systems
  • Willingness to learn new skills and techniques
  • Ability to think analytically and solve problems in a structured manner
  • Basic knowledge of Fume Hoods, Laminar flow hoods, and biosafety cabinets
  • Proficient in the use and knowledge of computers (hardware & software), including Microsoft Windows and Office
  • Effective communication, both written and oral
  • Ability to document maintenance work and collaborate with team members
  • Ability to lift and move heavy equipment, work in confined spaces, and stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to work Monday-Friday and may require weekend work to meet Manufacturing needs

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 0-1 years of maintenance experience
  • Strong interest in learning about the pharmaceutical manufacturing process and facility utility maintenance

Preferred Skills

  • Associate’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Applied Engineering or another relevant field
  • Enrollment or completion of a vocational or technical training program related to HVAC, electrical systems, plumbing, or industrial maintenance

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, ramps, etc.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged period
