Arlington County's Department of Technology Services is hiring an experienced Senior Network Engineer to be a part of the Technology Infrastructure and Operations Division's Network Engineering team. This team collaborates closely with the Connect Arlington Fiber team, security team, and both user and server support teams to ensure the availability of all Arlington County network and mission-critical resources. This position will provide Network Architecture level support for the networks in both the County and School facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, maintain, and support enterprise-level network infrastructure, including local area networks (LAN), metro area networks (MAN), wide area networks (WAN), data center networks (DCN), SCADA networks, intelligent traffic system networks (ITS), and cloud environments;
  • Lead and execute network architecture initiatives, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance;
  • Troubleshoot complex network issues and provide solutions for ongoing optimization;
  • Collaborate with internal teams to assess and fulfill network requirements for various business functions;
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior and mid-career network analysts, assisting with escalated issues;
  • Provide Tier 1-4 level support for the Department related to network and cybersecurity issues; and
  • Develop and regularly review network documentation, including diagrams, drawings, statements of work, contracts, SLAs, standards, policies and procedures to identify areas of concerns and to recommend improvements and solutions.

Minimums:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems Management, Mathematics, or a related field; and
  • Considerable experience managing programs and systems at a senior level, which includes developing, implementing, and troubleshooting highly complex technology systems; and researching, analyzing and developing solutions to complex operational problems.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Proven experience implementing Network Infrastructure protocols (DNS, DHCP, NTP, FTP, HTTP, SMTP, 802.1X, Multicast) and an understanding of how to support these applications/protocols;
  • Demonstrated experience providing, understanding, and explaining both logical and physical diagrams for documentation of networks;
  • Experience working with Internet Service Providers in a multihomed environment;
  • Expert level understanding of MPLS, BGP, OSPF, EVPN, VRF-Lite, and how to utilize these protocols;
  • Wireless network infrastructure design, implementation and support;
  • Cisco CCIE or equivalent certifications;
  • Advanced network troubleshooting experience utilizing packet analysis tools; and/or
  • Experience formulating disaster Recovery best practices.

Work hours: 

  • This is a 40-hour per week position, Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with some flexibility.  
  • Occasional evenings, nights and weekends may be required.
