About the Role
We are looking for a strategy and operations leader to apply their skills in corporate strategy, business operations, and media, supporting senior leadership and working across all functions to maximize the business impact of The Athletic’s large and growing commercial organization. Our ideal candidate will be experienced in building and implementing business strategy and business operations within the consumer media industry or bring relevant skills from the consulting industry.

About the Role
We are looking for a strategy and operations leader to apply their skills in corporate strategy, business operations, and media, supporting senior leadership and working across all functions to maximize the business impact of The Athletic’s large and growing commercial organization. Our ideal candidate will be experienced in building and implementing business strategy and business operations within the consumer media industry or bring relevant skills from the consulting industry.
Responsibilities
- Lead the strategy and operations function within the broader business development and commercial organization.
- Help grow The Athletic’s commercial business and build out the strat-ops team.
- Work closely with Head of BD + Strategy and CCO to define and implement The Athletic’s long-term commercial vision.
- Develop and grow new commercial business lines across:
- Licensing - distribution of The Athletic’s content offerings through partnerships with other publishers, media companies, and brands, with a particular focus on international.
- IP Development - reimagine The Athletic’s storytelling in new, off-platform formats, with a particular focus on film, television, and publications.
- Commerce - build The Athletic’s direct to consumer retail business.
- Work in collaboration with the strategic partnerships team to identify and source new, commercial partners across key categories.
- Lead the commercial development of The Athletic’s burgeoning franchise and formats business, working cross-functionally across departments to help bring them to life.
- Ensure that The Athletic’s strategic vision is consistent across the commercial function.
- Organizational mapping and process definition.
Requirements
- BA/BS degree with 7+ years of relevant consulting or strat-ops experience.
- MBA preferred.
- Experience in managing cross-functional teams in a matrix environment.
- Proficiency developing project plans, process maps, and project tracking.
- Proficiency with financial modeling and presentation development.
- High level of professionalism; driven and motivated with excellent follow-up.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Creative and strategic thinking skills.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with colleagues based in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, around North America, and internationally.
