Continuing Non-Tenure-Track Faculty Position (Montserrat Lectureship) in the Natural, Mathematical, or Social Sciences
College of the Holy CrossAbout the role
Description
The College of the Holy Cross is pleased to announce one opening in the field of either Natural Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, or Social Sciences for a Continuing Non-Tenure-Track (CNTT) Position (Lectureship) in Montserrat, our first year program. The initial three-year term of this lectureship will begin in August 2025 and the position will contribute to the stable pool of talented faculty who are integrated from departments across the College into the program. We seek applicants who will enhance our Montserrat offerings and have demonstrated talent and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration and teaching first-year students.
All Holy Cross first-year students enroll in a year-long Montserrat seminar that aims to develop their foundational skills in the liberal arts, including critical reading, writing, speaking, analysis, and other discipline-appropriate skills. In a small class setting, students engage with and reflect on complex issues, research and debate open-ended questions, and work closely with classmates on innovative projects. Montserrat seminars are organized within one of six clusters grouped by interdisciplinary themes (Contemporary Challenges, Core Human Questions, Divine, Global Society, Natural World, and Self). Throughout the year, the faculty members in each cluster bring students together across seminars by reading common texts and through cluster-wide events and activities that connect to questions raised in the classroom.
The faculty member will teach two sections of a year-long seminar (i.e., two courses in the fall and two in the spring) in one Montserrat themed cluster per year. The faculty member will participate in planning workshops, cluster faculty and Montserrat program meetings, and co-curricular events, and, in addition, will advise approximately 10-15 first-year students each year.
The faculty member may have the opportunity to teach one additional course per year in the faculty member’s department of expertise, contingent upon departmental needs. Compensation for this fifth course would be on a per-course basis.
Appointments will be for an initial period of three years and may be eligible for renewal, subject to review following procedures established for CNTT positions at the College. Benefits, conference travel, and eligibility for research and publications support are available through the Provost’s Supplemental Research Fund. CNTT faculty are eligible for reimbursement of relocation costs within the College’s published policies. All full-time appointments offer competitive salaries and include full benefits. Qualifications
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to, and excellence in, undergraduate teaching and inclusive pedagogies as informed by current practice and scholarship in the field. Further, they must demonstrate commitment to, and excellence in, teaching and mentoring first-year students, in particular. Candidates for the position must also have the intellectual flexibility to enable them to teach in at least two different Montserrat clusters over the term of their appointment. Ph.D. is required by the beginning of the appointment.
Application Instructions
Please submit a cover letter explaining interest in and qualifications for the position, a current curriculum vitae, unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a statement on teaching, and two confidential letters of recommendation. The teaching statement should include a reflection on the challenges and opportunities of teaching first-year students, a description of the candidate’s specific teaching interests in the Montserrat program, and some ideas for courses that could be suitable for Montserrat clusters. In your cover letter, please address the ways you might contribute to and further the College’s mission as a Jesuit, undergraduate liberal arts college, and its core commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We encourage applicants to describe prior experiences incorporating inclusive pedagogies into their teaching.
