Position Overview:

Our Facility Security Unit (FSU) is currently hiring multiple Facility Security Officers (FSOs). As an FSO you will be one of the first staff members to welcome people into the various facilities we serve, and will be responsible for keeping our facilities, staff, and community members safe.  The FSU is a team of uniformed staff who operate 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Telework arrangements are not available for FSOs.

What it means to be an FSO:

  • You will be responsible for an assigned post where your duties will include but are not limited to; regulation of access to County facilities and facilitating a safe and secure space for County business to be conducted.
  • Monitor alarm systems and respond to fire, duress, and other alarms inside the facility while demonstrating proficiency in essential, modern security equipment and techniques.
  • Participate in coordinated public safety activities with law enforcement and corrections personnel.
  • Accept bail funds, take clothing exchanges, issue property releases, maintain visitor files, keep daily logs, write incident reports, and testify in court hearings as required.
  • Use excellent communication and customer service skills to provide information about access to the justice system, jail operations, and community resources (emergency housing, food, clothing, medical care).
  • As a uniformed member of the MCSO team, you may be asked to respond to a variety of emergencies, intervene with members of the community who are in mental health crisis and/or address those who are being disruptive. MCSO provides new Officers with a comprehensive training program in conflict management with a focus on communication and de-escalation techniques. Additional training will be provided in the utilization of defensive tools and techniques (including exposure to oleoresin capsicum, OC spray).

The successful candidate will:

  • Be able to multi-task and be flexible with interruptions to workflow.
  • Be able to pass mandatory participation in OC (pepper) spray training and exposure and defensive tactics training. These are essential components of the role, equipping you with the necessary skills for the job.
  • Work well under pressure, manage a high volume of foot traffic, and handle confrontive individuals.
  • Be a great team member and be flexible to changes in work locations and shifts when necessary to ensure safety needs, access to facilities, and County services are met.

During the six (6) month trial service period, applicants will participate in the FSU field training program where they will learn to work all posts and facilities the FSU serves. Because the work of MCSO is 24/7, you will be scheduled to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays. In addition to regularly scheduled shifts, overtime may be required to ensure adequate staffing is available to maintain public safety in our facilities. After completing the trial service period, regular shift and day off assignments are determined by an annual seniority bid process.

Apply as soon as possible! We anticipate keeping this recruitment open for two (2) weeks but may close early if 150 applications are received. We will start reviewing applications and inviting qualified applicants to start the testing process right away, so apply early!

To Qualify:

We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying. Please be clear and specific about how your background is relevant.
