The Opportunity
The Senior Accountant serves as a key member of the Finance team, providing advanced accounting expertise and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the organization’s financial data. This position manages complex accounting functions including general ledger oversight, account analyses and reconciliations, month-end close activities, and financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in strengthening internal controls, enhancing accounting processes, and supporting strategic financial decision-making across the organization.

Who We Are
The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people recently released from incarceration. Across the United States, 8,000-9,000 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.
What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 30,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996.
Who You Are
- You have at least 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a nonprofit environment. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
- You are proficient in Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables and advanced formulas).
- You have a strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting principles.
- You have experience preparing reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting audit processes.
- You have familiarity with cost allocation, fund accounting, and grant compliance strongly preferred.
- To Be Learned on the Job - navigation of Salesforce, Sage Intacct, and ADP Payroll systems.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial stakeholders.
- You have demonstrated the ability to work collaboratively and maintain confidentiality.

What You’ll Be Responsible For
Key responsibilities of the Senior Accountant include but are not limited to:
General Ledger & Financial Management
- Oversee day-to-day management of the general ledger, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and adherence to GAAP and organizational policies.
- Prepare and review monthly balance sheet account reconciliations—including bank accounts, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, petty cash, and payroll-related accounts—to ensure timely resolution of discrepancies.
- Prepare and post journal entries, including allocations for insurance, fringe benefits, and other cost distributions in accordance with approved cost allocation plans.
- Maintain and update the deferred rent schedule, preparing and submitting monthly entries for review and posting.
Financial Reporting & Audit Support
- Assist in preparing monthly and quarterly financial statements and supporting schedules.
