About the role

Position Overview

The Novelis Kennesaw R&D team is seeking a Formability Engineering Co-op. The person in this role will report to the Forming Engineer. The ideal candidate will be responsible for development and commissioning of a shear stress test for our automotive and can sheet products. This position will directly contribute to the improved understanding of Novelis’ products and allow us to provide better data and recommendations to our customers. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence the adoption of best practices and new technologies and see first-hand the role R&D plays in a global manufacturing company. This role is designed to build on the foundation of great team collaboration and strong project management.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Perform a literature review to understand the current state of methods used for shear stress testing
  • Design and modeling of sample geometry to assess material properties in a shear stress state
  • Completion of initial testing and data analysis needed for the commissioning of the test method
  • Draft work instructions and document results in a technical report. Present results to stakeholders within the organization
  • Demonstrate personal commitment to safety by following Novelis safety rules and equipment operating processes. Overall accountability and ensuring safety as the #1 priority

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3rd or 4th year Bachelors degree student (mechanical engineering, materials science)
  • Familiarity with mechanical testing methods, particularly universal testing equipment such as MTS or Instron
  • Self-starter able to work independently
  • Capability to thrive in a team environment, communicate well, and to engage and influence cross-functional teams within the R&D organization
  • Familiarity with CAD software, Autodesk Inventor preferred
  • Hands-on problem solving and prototyping experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of mechanics and materials stress states
  • Some experience with FE simulations
  • Data analysis and basic programming knowledge
  • Experience with experimental design

All full-time co-ops working 30 hours or more per week are eligible to participate in the Novelis Medical Plans. As a co-op you will also be eligible for paid holidays as outlined in the Novelis holiday schedule for the designated location.
