Per Diem Medical Radiation Physicist-EHC_QHC-12380-003

Under the general direction of Director of Service, serves as staff institutional physicist and radiation technical and safety consultant in Department of Radiation Oncology at Queen/Elmhurst Hospital Centers; provides advisory function on radiation technical and safety issues for Queens Health Network. Ensures safe, effective and efficient functioning and usage of radiation-producing equipment, radioactive materials and measuring devices in areas of responsibility by development, implementation and monitoring of quality assurance/CQI monitors. Provides guidance/consultation for start-up of specific testing, calibration and measurements guaranteeing effective operation of regulatory guidelines mandating patients and employee safety standards. Updates all policy and procedure materials relevant to specific radiation safety programs. Job does not provide direct patient care, but has direct impact on quality of program for all patients.  

1. Under guidance of Director of Service, serves as Chief Physicist for Department of Radiation Oncology; provides in-house advisory function of radiation equipment purchases and programs. Perform routine physical testing on applicable radiation producing units, Linear accelerator, High Dose Rate (HDR) machine, and computerized tomography scanners as required. Evaluated reproducibility of machine output, radiation beam quality, etc. in order to ensure compliance with all governmental and private regulatory standards. Supervises installation and acceptance testing of special equipment. Calibrates and aligns proper parameters necessary to perform safe, effective operation by physician/technologists. 
2. Under supervision, serves as Queens/Elmhurst Hospital Centers’ staff institutional radiation technical consultant; provides advisory function on radiation technical and safety issues for Queens Health Network. Develops quality assurance and safety standards for assigned areas engaging in usage of radiation-producing materials and equipment; monitors departmental and institutional compliance with private agency and governmental regulatory monitors and standards. Reviews and updates departmental and institutional policy and procedures manuals for assigned areas. Serves on institutional safety committee. 
3. In conjunction with senior management, evaluates and negotiates service contracts for all radiation generating equipment, treatment planning and imaging systems. Provides supervisory guidance to institutional radiation therapy programs; participates in planning, design and implementation of equipment and safety standards for the radiation oncology department. 
4. May participate in planning, organizing and conducting of student training programs and departmental in-service. May provide teaching or orientation to physicians and medical residents. Participates in special projects as assigned.  
5. Remains informed of current trends in field by reviewing literature, data and attending conferences or training program in order to meet CME requirements.
6. Performs related duties as required professionally or as assigned.  

-Job requires a minimum level of knowledge ordinarily acquired through completion of a Ph. D/Master’s Degree, in lieu of the Ph.D./Master’s Degree the American Board of Medical Physicists is accepted, to gain knowledge in physics, mathematics, health physics, anatomy and physiology in order to gain an understanding of the various radiation-producing qualities of radiological equipment and the physiological effects of its exposure to patients and employees. 

-Job requires minimum of five years demonstrated competence as staff physicist in large-scale healthcare entity in order to learn various aspects of treatment planning, simulation, dosimetry, and radiation safety and quality monitors. 

-New York State License.

-Certification required with nationally acknowledge certifying agency such as American Board of Radiology or equivalent organization. 
-Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 2007 or later version. 

-Interpersonal skills at high level to communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, other health professionals, patients, patients’ families, external state and private regulatory agencies.
