Job Description

Position Summary:

The Associate Scientist provides laboratory support in synthesizing salt forms of drug candidates and polymorphs, evaluates these forms for acceptability as drug substance as it relates to chemical manufacturing and formulation into pharmaceutical products, and is responsible for writing sections of reports for regulatory submissions.  The position is based in Groton, CT (USA).

Role Responsibilities:

  • Support multidisciplinary project teams and collaborate with colleagues to define and implement crystallization, polymorph, and salt screening activities according to project timelines.
  • Conduct solid state physical and chemical characterization of small molecules of pharmaceutical relevance.  This includes particle characterization (e.g., particle size, shape) and solid state characterization (e.g., spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, thermal analysis).
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Medicinal Chemistry, Formulation and Biopharmaceutics to define and implement screening and characterization strategies consistent with solid form selection.
  • Solve scientific problems using contemporary solid stateMaterials Science experimental techniques.
  • Contribute to the development of new scientific approaches and knowledge within the global Materials Science organization.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience in crystallization and solid state characterization (such as x-ray powder diffraction, polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, NMR, etc).
  • In-depth understanding of the physical and particle properties needed for drug substance manufacture and formulation into drug product.
  • Experience with solving Materials Science problems, e.g., solid state chemistry and particle characterization using experimental approaches and team collaboration.
  • Experience using electronic notebook for documentation.
  • Knowledgeable of GLP and chemical lab safety protocols.
  • Good organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • A strong interest and motivation to learn new technologies and concepts is expected.
