About the role

The Enoch Pratt Free Library has an opening for a Library Associate II for the Central Library /State Library Resource Center (SLRC) Division in the Business, Science, and Technology (BST) Department for reference, programs, and collections development.

This is position requires a commitment to public service and outreach with an awareness of the information needs of a large, urban, public library system. Included in this position is the opportunity to serve on Library committees, attend professional meetings, conferences and workshops.

The Library Associate works under the supervision of BST Department Manager.  This position works on-site and requires a flexible work schedule including evenings and Saturdays.

Salary:  $49,045 to $59,095 per year

Summary of Duties:

The summary of duties listed below is not exhaustive. Additional duties are dependent upon the needs of the hiring department.

  • Provides excellent reference services in person and remotely (phone, email, web conference) for patrons of all ages.

    • Researches current and historic materials in the subject areas covered in the department to provide the best reader’s advisory, recommends local resources to meet patron needs, assists in suggesting new resources and titles for acquisition, mentors patrons in the use of media.

    • Answers basic reference questions in person and remotely in the department as well as at the Central Hall service desk and in other departments as needed.

    • Locates materials for patrons.

    • Provides technology assistance to customers who are using the library’s computers or other library technology.

    • Does basic collection management (shelf reading, weeding, etc.) as needed in the department.

  • Assists in planning and executing public programs in the department.

  • Creates and refills displays of new and interesting materials.

  • Develop and lead workshops, demonstrations, and training sessions for patrons of all ages and skill levels.

  • Maintains an organized and safe public working environment, ensuring all equipment is in working order and supplies are stocked.

  • Develop instructional materials, guides, and tutorials to support patrons in learning new technologies.

  • Ensures compliance with library policies and safety procedures, including assisting patrons in following proper usage guidelines.

  • Participates in the planning and execution of SLRC library conferences.

  • Takes part in library staff and professional meetings. May participate in committees and on ad hoc project teams.

  • Provide library outreach at off-site events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in STEM, English, Social Work, or a related field.

  • Two years of experience in an education, bookstore, museum, or library environment.

  • Successful completion of the Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) during work time within two years of hire.

  • Ability to travel in Maryland with personal transportation.

  • Physical Requirements: Physical exertion such as standing; or recurring activities such as bending, crouching, reaching; pushing loaded book trucks; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as boxes of books or journals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Experience working with urban populations.

  • Experience developing and facilitating workshops, programs, or educational programs.

  • Experience with community outreach or public partnerships.

  • Fluency in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French, Korean, or other foreign languages.

  • Multicultural experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Moderate digital literacy including

    • Cloud-based office platforms such as O365 or G Suite (document, slide show, and spreadsheet applications)

    • Effective email communication

    • Effective utilization of shared documents

    • Effective use of web-based meeting software

    • Ability to distinguish between credible and non-credible web sources

    • Ability to fill out electronic forms
