Work Environment: The location of this position is flexible and open to virtual and/or remote based applicants.
What to expect: The Environmental Claims Unit (ECU) is currently looking to add an experienced senior-level environmental claim professional to their team. In this role, you will work closely with our internal counsel and on-staff Environmental Engineer and you will handle some of the most novel and interesting claims within the industry.
Types of Environmental claims:
Traditional Environmental Clean Up Matters involving the EPA or State Agencies
PFAS-related Clean up and Bodily Injury Claims
Lead Exposure Claims
Bacterial or Mold-Related Severe Injury Claims
Litigation/DJs Involving Environmental Coverage Issues
Class-Action Lawsuits Involving Environmental Issues
Multi-Plaintiff Toxic Tort Litigation
Litigation involving emerging environmental issues, which would include glyphosate, ethylene oxide, Paraquat, climate change and PFAS-related claims.
Ideal candidates will have:
8+ years of handling complex environmental claims.
Experience drafting detailed coverage letters and analyzing multi-line policies, including excess and umbrella policies.
Experience with writing detailed reports and effectively presenting recommendations to senior leadership
Expertise in handling litigated files
Substantial experience handling legacy environmental claims and the technical skills/knowledge to handle this caseload from day one.
Communication, organizational, negotiation, and leadership skills needed to succeed and provide superior results to our customers

Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Assists with the review and approval of all coverage decisions and all settlements.
Provides reserve analysis to ensure timely and accurate case reserves according to optimal claims practices.
Negotiates claims for settlements in excess of $2.0M up to $30.0M.
Maintains current knowledge of assigned insurance lines, court decisions which may impact the claims function, current guidelines and policy changes and modifications. This may require attendance at various seminars or training session
Serves as internal consultant and subject matter authority for assigned specialty.
Creates and analyzes severe incident reports, reinsurance reports and provides information to corporate office, Claims Management and Underwriting.
Works with Actuarial to identify short and long-term trends to forecast claims payouts, in terms of timing amounts.
Manages defense counsel in all lawsuit activities from inception throughout the life of the claim.
Provides advice, counsel and training to Claims Representatives of all levels. Provides specialized training and consultation to non-claims areas as requested.
Assists with establishing unit goals that are consistent with Nationwide Indemnity goals, mission and objectives. Responsible for achieving goals.
Delivers a positive customer service experience to all internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Manager/Director.
