We are seeking a Sr. Research Specialist who will develop, conduct and evaluate scientific research working in a laboratory and remotely. The main research fields are molecular genetics, proteomics and physiological assays in multiple models of cardiovascular diseases.
The range of duties includes, but is not limited to project planning, experimental design, developing methodology, conducting procedures, modifying procedures as needed, data collection and analysis, laboratory management, project management, grant writing, paper writing, assistance acquiring external funding. The Specialist will have an in-depth understanding of the context and implications of the research in order to apply and interpret theoretical knowledge necessary to conduct research.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs high throughput proteomic experiments with biological fluids/tissue by utilizing liquid chromatograph (LC, such as HPLC, PF2D), electrophoresis and immune assays.
- Performs sophisticated analyses of animal models of cardiac and skeletal muscle disease and knowledge of varied methods.
- Independently perform in the lab on all research assays specific to genomics, proteomics and muscle function.
- Works on immunoassays involving assay design, antibody testing, as well as determining specificity, sensitivity.
- Responsible for the maintenance of light and confocal microscopes for fly and mouse husbandry and colony/stock maintenance.
- Will collaborate with others on the development new technologies, protocols, and equipment.
- Participates in the design of experiments and evaluating/interpreting results.
- Makes intellectual contributions with the collaboration of the PI. Makes independent decisions that may alter research outcomes and objectives.
- Selects, develops, performs and evaluates research methods.
- Develops, design, and manage research projects with the ability to coordinate their own objectives.
- Maintains inventory levels and monitors storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies.
- Write peer reviewed manuscripts and grants. Co-author on publications while contributing thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis for papers, abstracts, and manuscripts.
- Provide direction to other staff, students, and provide evaluation feedback.
- Enhance problem solving through interactions and collaboration with senior researchers at meetings and or professional presentations.
- Works independently with minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Four year's experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
- Functional knowledge in protein separation and muscle physiology.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- MS preferred.
- Experience in gel electrophoresis, HPLC or FPLC.
- Previous experience in proteomics, clinical proteomics and biomarker field.
- Experience in 2-dimensional electrophoresis, Western blotting, immune assay (ELISA), chromatography and mass spectrometry.
- Experience in proteomics, clinical proteomics and biomarker field a plus.
- Experience with light and confocal microscopy maintenance and imaging a plus.
- Proficiency in Drosophila molecular genetics and standard molecular biology techniques preferred. Adept in striated muscle physiology and physiological concepts; experience in confocal and digital video light microscopy helpful.
