ER/ICU Veterinary Assistant
 The Animal Emergency & Referral Associates in West Caldwell, NJ is hiring a dedicated and enthusiastic Certified Veterinary Technician/ Experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our Emergency team!
 Founded in 1977 by a visionary team of veterinarians, the Animal Emergency Group was created to meet the growing demand for specialized around-the-clock emergency care for pets. As one of the first hospitals in the nation dedicated exclusively to small animal emergency medicine, it set a new standard in veterinary care. Position Overview:
The purpose of this position is to provide support to Doctors and Veterinary Nurses so they may continue to provide excellent patient care.  The Veterinary Assistant must pay attention to detail and maintain very high standards of cleanliness and care.  The Veterinary Assistant must be able to communicate well with coworkers to ensure overall accuracy and satisfaction. 

Compensation:
  • $20-$23/hr. based on skill level/experience
  • Weekend Differentials Offered $$$++
Anticipated Schedule:
  • Full Time
  • Sunday - Wednesday
    • Hours: TBD
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist doctors and technicians with all needs, including but not limited to:
  • Maintaining clean, dry, and comfortable surroundings for all ICU, Specialty, ER, and Out-Patients
  • Safely and effectively restrain patients for procedures
  • Re-stocking and maintaining cleanliness of ICU, Treatment area, Surgery, Radiology, Ultrasound, hospital wards, exam rooms, laboratory & pharmacy areas
  • Laundry, sweeping, mopping, and general custodial responsibilities
  • ER/triage preparation, procedure preparation (lac repair, blocked cat, etc), OR setup, breakdown & disinfection, pack preparation, instrument sterilization, and equipment cleaning/maintenance
  • Assisting with basic treatment responsibilities: walking dogs, feeding patients, obtaining weights, cleaning cages and bedding, and preparing for in-patient procedures
  • Documenting accurately into patient medical records (treatment sheets, computer)
  • Become familiar with basic veterinary medical terminology
  • Become familiar with basic client education including nutrition, parasite control, zoonotic diseases, home care, medication administration, post-operative care, and all other hospital recommendations/protocols, as directed by a veterinarian or technician
  • Able to take vitals accurately
  • Able to perform basic phlebotomy on stable patients
  • Crosstrain to assist in other areas of the hospital as needed
  • Work a minimum of 1 year in this position for eligibility to advance

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 1 year of applicable experience as a veterinary technician/assistant
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and acceptable sanitation/sterilization practices
  • Comprehension of commonly used medical terminology and equipment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluent English skills (speaking & reading) are required for the role; fluency in multiple languages a plus!
