Description

The Director of Global Safety and Security works under the general guidance of the Vice Provost for Global Engagement and in collaboration with relevant schools, units, and campus-based parties. The Director promotes standards of best practice for international travel health, safety, and security, and designs and creates system and process enhancements to ensure that Emory can support the health, safety, and wellbeing of community members on university-sponsored travel abroad.

The person in the position will provide subject-matter expertise relevant to the role and build on existing experience to stay current on global travel risks and risk mitigation strategies, driving related improvements at Emory.  They will monitor current events and health, safety, and security developments affecting international travel, with a particular focus on those that could impact Emory travel and activities abroad.  They will monitor Emory travel activity and may conduct periodic site visits, as appropriate.

The person in this role will demonstrate a high level of understanding of insurance programs relevant to Emory-sponsored international travel and assist with managing Emory’s relationships with global assistance and insurance providers. 

They will engage with and participate in relevant professional networks nationally and internationally. They will demonstrate strong customer service skills as well as excellent written and oral communication abilities and an ability to work in cross-cultural environments. 

The Director will manage the program budget and associated staff resources and perform related responsibilities as required. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develops and maintains standardized health, safety, and security training programs and materials for international travel and organizes and delivers related orientation and educational sessions. Provides process improvement and coordination, working with established and new programs abroad and student-facing groups to strengthen support for travel health, safety and security, with a particular focus on ensuring best practices are in place for all student-focused international travel.
• Leads efforts to implement and optimize travel registry processes, assessing available resources (e.g., software packages) to enhance these efforts and develops associated implementation recommendations to senior leadership. Contributes to the continuous improvement of integrated data systems to support international travel health, safety, and security.
• Leads efforts to provide traveler support and serves as a primary point of contact for the health, safety, and security questions of faculty and staff engaged in international travel and/or supporting student international travel.
• Provides health, safety, and security guidance and assistance before, during, and after travel to faculty and staff engaged in international travel and/or supporting student international travel; this includes providing assistance with evaluating the health, safety, and security risks associated with particular destinations and activities abroad.
• Provides critical event and emergency response for international travelers, working with Emory's Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR), Office of Insurance Services, and other relevant units to identify and assess emerging threats related to international travel and develop appropriate responses, including coordinating decisions on university travel guidance and restrictions and managing the travel permission process in instances where travel has been restricted due to safety, security, or other concerns. 
• Participates in emergency and crisis response efforts in coordination with other related Emory resources. Serves as primary on-call incident leader for international emergencies, available after hours and weekends, as needs and crises arise.  Coordinates and manages appropriate outreach to travelers in challenging situations and/or those needing assistance.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
