WHO WE ARE
The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences and Education (CLASSE) carries out frontier research in accelerator physics and engineering as well as supporting operation of the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) for photon science through the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). The CHESS organization provides X-ray experimental facilities and brings in users from around the world. We have a global reputation as a first-class facility.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
The SRF Research Support Specialist conducts and leads chemistry operations essential to the CLASSE Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) group and assists the Newman Laboratory Chemical Room manager with daily operations. Additionally, this technical position includes the operation and maintenance of vacuum equipment/furnaces and contributes to the assembly, repair, and maintenance of complex laboratory equipment. The SRF Research Support Specialist/Research Technician is a highly-skilled collaborator who communicates effectively, offers advice, seeks to find solutions, and looks to improve processes. This position has a general awareness of the on-goings throughout the laboratory, and adapts to the changing needs and experiments. This position will support multiple research programs across CLASSE/CHESS.
The primary responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to):
Conducting and leading SRF chemistry operations (e.g., SRF cavity electropolishing, acid etching, etc.)
Providing support to the Newman Laboratory Chemical Room Manager
Operating and maintaining the SRF Ultra-High Vacuum furnace
Participating and often leading in the assembly, repair, and maintenance of complex laboratory equipment
Assisting with the maintenance of SRF facilities
Attending staff and safety meetings and trainings as assigned
WHAT WE NEED
Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing
Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, two to four years of relevant technical or industrial experience, or equivalent combination
Experience with fabricating and assembling mechanical assemblies of varying complexity
Experience with basic mechanical design and/or troubleshooting
Must be team-oriented and safety conscious
Ability to work under general supervision; organized and self-motivated
Capable of adapting to the changing needs of a research environment; able to receive directions and to communicate effectively
WHAT WE PREFER
Chemistry experience/certification (e.g., chemical handling, knowledge of chemical compatibility and safety requirements for using acids and solvents, etc.)
Compressed gas cylinder handling
Cleanroom experience
Knowledge of vacuum systems, vacuum work best practices, leak checking, and delicate component assembly
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Experience with instrumentation and data collection
Experience/certification with material handling and rigging equipment (e.g., forklifts, cranes)
Basic machine shop/fabrication skills and experience
Experience with electrical circuits and components
