About the role

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for the Tasmanian Anaesthetic Training Program (TATP) Registrar vacancies for 2027.

The TATP provides anaesthesia training at all 3 Tasmanian Health Service (THS) hospitals.  It has between 35-40 positions each year including up to 8 provisional fellowship positions, with a variable number of vacancies. All trainees in Tasmania are included in the TATP.

Positions within the TATP are predominantly length of training positions but may also include shorter-term and fixed-term appointments depending on trainee needs and available positions.  Provisional fellowship positions are available in Hobart and Launceston and are advertised separately.

The Tasmanian Anaesthetic Training Program Committee (TATPC) represents the 3 participating hospitals in the Tasmanian Anaesthetic Training Program and under the jurisdiction of the Department of Health, Tasmania and the ANZCA Tasmanian Regional Committee

General information

The TATP is a state-wide end-to-end anaesthetic training program compliant with ANZCA’s guidelines and curriculum.  It meets all of ANZCA’s training requirements.  It offers anaesthetic training at all three Tasmanian Health Service (THS) hospitals including the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), the Launceston General Hospital (LGH), and the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH).

The TATP is an established anaesthetic training program with consistently strong academic results, high quality training and trainee satisfaction.  It offers many advantages:

  • rich clinical experience and ongoing exposure to multiple fields of anaesthetic practice throughout training including paediatrics and obstetrics
  • protected weekly education program for all trainees including a fortnightly state-wide primary teaching session which basic trainees are expected to attend via videoconference.
  • excellent recent examination results including Cecil Grey prize winners in the fellowship examination in 2012 and 2016 and Renton prize winners in the primary examination in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
  • growing culture of research and clinical audit
  • opportunities to actively pursue clinical and non-clinical interest
  • diverse trainee backgrounds and interests
  • identification of trainees with a rural interest and development of rural anaesthesia training
  • established overseas anaesthesia links and opportunities
  • collegial, supportive and respectful departments and hospitals
  • diverse and high-quality lifestyle opportunities and experiences for trainees and their families

Length of Training Agreement and Mutual Commitment

Most trainees on the TATP are offered a length of training Agreement - 2 year appointment with extension negotiable where applicable. This agreement allows the trainee up to 5 years to complete 4 years of basic and advanced training. The additional year allows up to 1 year of extended training or interrupted training, part-time training (minimum 0.5 FTE as per ANZCA training requirements) or leave including parental leave. This allows the TATP to support trainees who require flexible training for personal or professional reasons, including examination progression, family matters, health concerns or life choices.

Trainees with a fixed-term contract, an expired length of training agreement or more than 1 FTE of interrupted, extended, or part-time training will need to re-apply to complete any outstanding training requirements. Exceptional circumstances and further consideration of additional flexible training options are considered on an individual basis. Due to the needs of the overall training program the TATP requests advance notice, where possible, of flexible training needs. Please discuss with the Supervisor of Training and the Rotational Supervisor.

The TATP provides trainees with clinical opportunities to complete their training requirements including access to the necessary volume of practice, clinical experience, and specialized study units. Whilst every effort will be made to ensure all trainees have access to appropriate clinical opportunities, trainees who undertake interrupted or extended training may need additional time to complete their training requirements.

Consistent with ANZCA accreditation and trainee distribution trainees will be expected to rotate between the 3 ANZCA accredited anaesthesia training sites in Tasmania, including the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), the Launceston General Hospital (LGH), and the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH).

Criteria to remain in a training pathway position:

  1. Trainees must continue to achieve satisfactory clinical performance as assessed in accordance with the ANZCA training program
  2. Trainees must complete all BT and AT requirements within 5 years including both
