Under the direction of the National Senior Vice President, Federal Advocacy and in close collaboration with multiple departments, the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing the American Heart Association’s global advocacy priorities and partnership engagement strategy across international governmental organizations (IGO), global nongovernmental organizations (NGO), and global and domestic coalitions focused on improving cardiovascular health around the world.

 

Specifically, the Global Advocacy Portfolio Lead works closely with the Office of the CEO and the Advocacy, International Business Development, Marketing and Communications, and Mission Advancement Teams to position the American Heart Association as a leader in global health and advocacy, to build support globally for the control of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and to advocate domestically for new federal policies that support global NCD prevention and control. In this highly matrixed, collaborative role, the Global Advocacy Portfolio Lead exercises the highest levels of tact, diplomacy, and independent judgement in all interactions, including those with high-level partners, and in representing the American Heart Association at global convenings.

 

This role is located in Washington, D.C. or New York, NY (Home Based is acceptable).

Responsibilities

The Global Advocacy Portfolio Lead is responsible for the development and execution of the American Heart Association’s global stakeholder engagement and advocacy plan. More specifically, the incumbent:

 

• Supports high-profile, high-level relationships with multilateral institutions and collaborating partners, including the United Nations (UN), World Health Organization (WHO), World Economic Forum, and World Heart Federation. Monitors, engages, and participates in key international meetings, including World Health Assembly and regional WHO meetings, as assigned.

 

• Develops organizational statements for input to the UN policy process, including the preparatory meetings of the U.S. delegation and other regional council meeting of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
• Maintains the American Heart Association’s standing and consultative status with the United Nations Economic Social Council by providing annual updates on necessary documentation and reporting.

 

• Serves as the American Heart Association’s representative on the NCD Alliance and develops the Association’s strategy for engagement and support, including global partner work in support of relevant supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals.

 

• Develops initiatives and opportunities to build public commitment to CVD and NCD control; to incorporate CVD and other NCDs in U.S. foreign policy and development agendas; and to encourage federal funding for global health. Represents the American Heart Association in U.S.-based global advocacy coalitions (e.g., Global Health Council and the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition).

 

• Advocates for the inclusion of CVD and other chronic diseases in global public health programs and agendas (e.g., Sustainable Development Goals) and on the agendas of multilateral institutions (e.g., G20, World Economic Forum).

 

• Manages, monitors, and evaluates the creation and release of key resources, including media materials and international policy positions. As assigned, coordinates the creation of reports and research by bilateral and multilateral institutions and research organizations.

 

• Provides verbal and written updates and briefings on global CVD advocacy issues to the Association’s leadership, partners, and funders, as needed. Identifies and helps recruit volunteer experts to advise the American Heart Association’s global CVD and NCD advocacy program.
