About the role

Overview: The Environmental Heavy Machine Operator is responsible for operating the telehandler and assisting the Environmental Technician with various environmental management tasks on-site. This role ensures compliance with safety and environmental regulations while efficiently handling waste, spill response, and stormwater protection measures. Only fully trained employees who have completed the Heavy Machine Operator Training and passed the certification test are permitted to operate heavy machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Heavy Equipment Operation

· Operate the telehandler safely and efficiently in accordance with site regulations and manufacturer guidelines.

· Conduct daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections of the telehandler to ensure proper functionality.

· Report any mechanical issues or malfunctions immediately to the maintenance team.

· Follow all site safety protocols, including maintaining a safe perimeter around the machine during operation.

2. Waste Management & Dumpster Maintenance

· Assist the Environmental Technician by compacting overloaded dumpsters using the telehandler to optimize waste capacity.

· Ensure proper handling and placement of dumpsters to prevent safety hazards.

· Coordinate with the Secai management team to schedule dumpster exchanges when full.

· Maintain clear access routes for waste removal trucks and heavy machinery.

3. Environmental Protection Measures

· Support the installation and maintenance of storm drain filters to prevent contamination from construction site runoff.

· Ensure proper identification and labeling of tanks and hazardous material containers.

· Follow protocols for handling and storing hazardous materials in compliance with environmental regulations.

4. Spill Management & Cleanup

· Identify, report, and clean small spills promptly using appropriate absorbent materials.

· Assist in larger spill containment and cleanup efforts by working with the Environmental Technician and site safety team.

· Maintain an inventory of spill response materials and ensure accessibility in high-risk areas.

5. Safety & Compliance

· Adhere to OSHA, EPA, and Secai site-specific environmental and safety regulations.

· Attend required safety TBMs, machine operation refresher courses, and environmental training.

· Maintain proper documentation of work activities, inspections, and incident reports as required.

6. Equipment & Tools:

· Telehandler (approved for use by certified operators only)

· Spill response kits (absorbents, containment booms, and neutralizing agents)

· Storm drains filters and related installation tools

· Communication devices (radio, phone) for coordination with site personnel

7. Training & Certification Requirements:

· Successful completion of Heavy Machine Operator Training

· Passing of operational competency test and certification renewal as required

· Site-specific safety and environmental compliance training

· Emergency response training for spills and hazardous material handling

8. Shift & Working Hours:

· Work schedule aligned with customer needs. Regular schedule is Monday to Friday 7am-4pm.

· Availability for emergency spill response and high-priority environmental tasks.

 

 

9. Reporting & Documentation:

· Maintain logs of telehandler operation, including maintenance and daily inspection reports.

· Document all spill incidents, mitigation efforts, and preventive measures taken.

· Submit daily reports on dumpster conditions, stormwater protection efforts, and environmental compliance status.
