About the team

Our mission is to grow and strengthen the marketplace by building strategic partnerships and guiding long-term planning. We work with external partners on both the supply and demand sides to expand our offerings and reach. Internally, we collaborate closely with teams like Product, Marketing, Operations, and Finance to ensure our partnerships and growth initiatives align with company priorities and deliver meaningful value to our customers, pros, and partners.

The New Ventures team sits within Business Development and is tasked with ideating, incubating, and standing up new “bets” within Thumbtack. They think like GMs and work cross functionally and co-own strategy, partner development, product strategy, and on the ground execution of the “new ventures” they are building. These teams create value by identifying new opportunities outside of Thumbtack’s core business, and often focus on  creating net new experiences for new user segments. The main objective and ultimate goal for the team is to enable the overall success of our new ventures.

About the role

The New Ventures Lead is responsible for the strategy and execution of “new ventures” within Thumbtack. These new ventures can be a variety of opportunities, including entering new verticals, and/or building net new products and/experiences.. The New Ventures Lead will accelerate the development of these opportunities by being an “owner” and thinking like a GM to create strategy, develop partnerships (when applicable), co-build GTM motions, and roll their sleeves up to execute on the ground tactics. The New Ventures Lead will work with the broader Business Development leadership team to continuously improve our frameworks for identifying, prioritizing, executing, and iterating on strategic distribution opportunities. This person will work closely with our embedded cross-functional partners across Product, Design, Engineering, Marketing, Data Science, Sales, Commercial Strategy, and other BizDev teams to ensure that the joint goals, objectives, and needs of our business  are met/exceeded, and result in unlocking future growth opportunities for Thumbtack.

What you'll do 

  • Serve as a “GM” thats responsible for the strategy and execution of new bets, including developing OKRs and KPIs to measure our success across your portfolio of projects. 
  • Source and develop new partners, when applicable, and work with other business development teams to ensure we have the necessary partners to make the new bets successful
  • Project/program manage the projects and initiatives within the portfolio of new ventures
  • Identify key requirements needed to stand-up a new bet, and subsequently the requirements to scale if/when needed
  • Lead cross-functional workstreams to develop, test, and refine these initiatives, to hit (or exceed) our KPIs and inform the future of each new venture/ partnership/ vertical strategy
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to inform near and long-term product roadmap to widen the aperture of addressable verticals
  • Travel to internal company meetings, partners, and conferences required throughout the year; at least 10 -20% of your working time.

In order to be successful, you must bring

  • 7+ years of experience in partnerships, business development, strategy, and/or management consulting (or comparable experiences)
  • Experience setting and achieving revenue goals or other financial metrics
  • Ability to facilitate a path forward, balancing a diverse set of perspectives and priorities
  • Comfort being at the intersection of strategy, operations, business development, and technology 
  • Ability to autonomously design, create, and deliver results and presentations for senior and executive leadership with minimal supervision
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners, with a strong ability to persuade and influence
  • Strong project management skills to juggle a portfolio of projects
