Basic Function
The Senior Counsel, Employment Law & Litigation, will serve as a global team member of the APS Legal Department, providing expert legal advice and support on employment law matters and management of litigation cases. This role will support our APS People & Culture (P&C) organization and our APS senior management, ensuring legal compliance with relevant labor and employment laws, centrally managing APS litigation and other disputes, and contributing to the development of a positive workplace culture
Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide strategic legal advice on a wide range of labor and employment issues within the U.S., including employee relations, workplace policies, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour laws, employee benefits, and occupational safety and health.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor and employment laws and regulations. Monitor changes in laws and regulations.
- Oversee and manage a network of external legal counsel to support labor and employment matters in regions outside of the U.S.
- Identify potential legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate these risks. Provide proactive legal support to APS P&C and senior management to prevent legal issues before they arise.
- Develop and deliver training programs for P&C and senior management on labor and employment law topics to ensure understanding and compliance.
- Stay abreast of legal developments and best practices in labor and employment law. Share knowledge and insights with the legal team and other stakeholders.
- Provide legal advice on internal investigations into employee complaints and allegations of misconduct, including discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Provide guidance and recommendations for resolution and corrective actions.
- Advise on labor relations matters, including collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance resolution. Develop strategies for maintaining positive labor relations and addressing union-related issues.
- Participate in collective bargaining negotiations and provide legal support to ensure compliance with labor laws and company policies.
- Provide support on international labor and employment matters as needed, ensuring compliance with global labor standards and practices. Advise on cross-border employment issues, including expatriate assignments and global mobility/immigration.
Min. Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited U.S. law school or law degree or equivalent from EU or non-EU jurisdictions.
- Must be licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience as a practicing attorney with a focus on labor and employment law and/or litigation.
- Experience in managing complex labor and employment and/or litigation matters.
- Experience with international labor and employment law is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong people skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Comprehensive legal, collaboration, strategic, client management, and practice area skills, along with other relevant skills supporting the APS business.
- High ethical standards and professional integrity.
Preferred Qualifications
- English preferred, additional foreign language a plus
- Experience as in-house counsel preferred
