About the Role
The New York Times is looking for a full stack Software Engineer to join the NYT Cooking team. NYT Cooking helps you discover and cook the world’s best recipes. The NYT Cooking team is tight knit and interdisciplinary — we collaborate with our design, data, product, and editorial partners to develop new features for both our responsive website and mobile apps. We are made up of small, focused groups tasked with building great cooking experiences on a variety of devices and platforms, including web, iOS and Android. You will report to the Engineering Manager for the Cooking Publishing team.
Responsibilities:
- You will join Cooking’s Publishing team.
- You will work on our editorial tooling, creating software that supports our editors and eventually Cooking’s end users.
- You will work with product, design, data, and editorial partners to better the Cooking publishing platform and make it easier for editors to create content and users to find our recipes and cook with us more often.
- Your work will allow editors to develop their content more quickly and easily through tooling like a new Recipe Editor.
- You will help us build a technical vision based on evaluating existing technologies, partnering with product, design and other publishing-focused teams within the company, and using out-of-the-box software built for publishing teams across the Times.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Basic Qualifications:
- 1+ years of experience building and maintaining modern web applications in a professional setting (internships included)
- 1+ years of experience with Javascript, Typescript, React, Next.js
- An understanding of internal tooling systems and how to support their users
- 1+ years of experience troubleshooting systems using observability and monitoring tools
- 1+ years of experience experience collaborating with cross-functional partners
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with GraphQL
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails
- Familiarity with AWS, GCP or other cloud provider products and services
- Familiarity with Docker or similar containerization service
- Database experience, particularly using PostgreSQL
This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:$96,000—$110,000 USD
