Substitute Assistant Teacher - Early Learning Community

This is an on-call Substitute Teacher position in the Early Learning Community at Pacific University

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The Early Learning Community (ELC) at Pacific University seeks applicants who are committed to working on-call as a collaborative member of a team of educators in a progressive preschool/kindergarten education environment that models best practices.

Functions as Substitute Teacher in Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms, coordinating with classroom Lead Teacher or teacher on duty to provide a supportive learning environment so that children acquire connected, meaningful knowledge about themselves and the world. The Substitute Teacher collaborates with all staff in responding to the developmental needs of young children and in nurturing their well-being, employing NAEYC-recognized best practices which express the educational philosophy and goals of the ELC and College of Education.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work with the Lead Teacher to facilitate learning experiences using a project-based approach.
• Assist in the implementation of lesson plans designed to meet curricular goals and support the development of language and literacy in all learners.
• Interact with children in ways that respect each child’s individuality and nourish growth in intellectual, socio-emotional, artistic, and physical domains.
• Lead groups of children as suggested by the daily schedule of activities, using practices which promote constructive play, positive group interaction, and respect for school environment.
• Assist in identifying and meeting the developmental, health, safety, and security needs of each child.
• Create and maintain positive relationships with parents, observing appropriate boundaries in the communication of information and feedback about children.
• Assist throughout facility with the maintenance of orderliness and positive aesthetic. General housekeeping tasks may include dishes, laundry, restocking of supplies and light cleaning.
• Maintain and nurture positive and effective relationships with guests of the Early Learning Community.
• Communicate regularly and appropriately with Lead Teacher on classroom activities and child progress, ask Lead Teacher for direction in any uncertainty about teaching approaches, be receptive to feedback and suggestions for improvement, and work cooperatively with all staff.
• Demonstrate a willingness and openness to take on duties as needed for the smooth operation of school and well-being of the children.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Must be at least eighteen years of age, have interest and experience working with young children, and meet the requirements of the Child Care Division for teacher who is qualified to independently supervise children.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS:

• Familiarity and experience with project-based, constructivist educational approaches and working with young children.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain pleasant, effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and the general public.
