The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides high-quality business services to support the Lab's research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab's success.  Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven’s Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, and the Business Operations Offices.  The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab’s fiscal matters and its approximately $700 million annual budget.

The BSD has an opening for a Business Operations Manager 2 position within the Nuclear & Particle Physics Directorate (NPP).  This individual will report to the Business Operations Manager (BOM) who oversees the NPP Directorate. 

This position will manage overall business operations for the Collider-Accelerator Department (CAD) and the Isotope Research & Production Department (IP) within NPP.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Candidate will perform or support a wide variety of financial functions for the NPP Business Operations Office, including, but not limited to: financial analysis, budgeting, labor forecasting, rate development, development of current year cost plans, preparation of financial summaries for management, isotope inventory and cost of goods sold, periodic program reviews, annual budget briefings, and Laboratory planning exercises.

  • Oversee business operations (budgets, financial reporting, inventory, contract administration, property) for complex operating programs (accelerator operations, isotope research and production) that frequently share operating resources.

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining financial reports for internal and external stakeholders with adherence to strict deadlines.

  • Responsible for developing multi-year financial plans by working with department chairs and group leaders.

  • Responsible for internal/external financial oversight including specialized reports.

  • Track overall business performance by analyzing financial data and ensuring data complies with BNL policies and procedures.

  • Team with department leaders, business services staff, and administrative staff in order to secure information needed for analysis and generation of reports.

  • Serve as a departmental Business Point of Contact for all financial matters.

  • Supervise a staff of business professionals.  Establish goals and provide coaching to staff.

  • Adherence to all BNL business rules, allowable cost monitoring, and compliance.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance/Business or directly related field.

  • A minimum of six (6) years of full-time relevant experience in a substantive role in the accounting/financial field that demonstrates a detailed knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), variance analysis, and project reporting, including knowledge of budget planning.

  • Advanced skills in MS Excel; proficient in Microsoft Office, including: MS Word, PowerPoint, and databases.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work within tight time constraints while balancing multiple priorities.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • CPA or Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or closely related field.

  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft or similar Enterprise Reporting Software with the ability to generate queries and reports.

  • Familiarity with formal proposal submissions.

  • Experience working in a DOE Laboratory.

Compensation:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $121,600 - $201,850 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
