Hillcrest Hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Department provides pediatric care services in child-friendly waiting rooms where they have more privacy and comfort. This department is staffed 24/7 with board-certified, pediatric emergency medicine physicians, as well as nurses who are certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and pediatric trauma care. The Pediatric Emergency Department has a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) unit which provides children who are victims of assault, abuse or neglect with private care, utmost respect, compassion, complete physical assessments and, if needed, collecting physical evidence. The Emergency Department also has Child Life Specialists who help reduce anxiety for children and their families and provide guidance and emotional support. 

A caregiver in this position works nights from 7:00 p.m.  – 7:00 a.m. with every other weekend and holiday rotation requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide duties that assist in providing patient care in the Emergency Department under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.  
  • Obtain and record vital signs. 
  • Perform EKGs, CPR, phlebotomy and oral, nasal and ET suctioning.  
  • Initiate cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy and saline locks.  
  • Notify the RN and/or physician of rhythm changes.  
  • Apply orthopaedic appliances and simple splints.  
  • Size crutches and teach crutch walking.  
  • Assist with equipment setup, chest tubes, gastric lavage, LP, etc.  
  • Assist with restraint and seclusion of patients and apply restraint devices.  
  • Transport patients and specimens.  
  • Assist with sterile procedures and cleaning and maintaining supplies and equipment.  
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect patient privacy.  
  • Perform fluid/drug administration.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Completion of an accredited EMS-Paramedic training program  
  • Current licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMTP) in Ohio 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross  
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross 
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) OR American Red Cross upon hire or within one year of start date in the Emergency Department 
  • Clinical experience through an EMS Paramedic training program  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)  
  • One year of experience as an EMT-P  
  • Experience in a hospital setting or city ambulance
