Position Summary

Reporting to the VP, ESG Strategy and Execution, the Director, ESG Strategy & Engagement, will play a critical role in ensuring the successful execution of our ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) strategy. They will engage with stakeholders across the organization, supporting functional teams in execution against plans, providing strategic advice to reach goals and milestones, and support tracking and reporting progress to company leadership. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to our mission and help BMS continuously improve our performance in ESG factors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Key engagement partner for functional stakeholders and lead project management for execution of our ESG strategy for designated material topics, ensuring that initiatives are aligned with ESG strategy and assisting teams in tracking and maintaining progress on timelines and deliverables.
  • Partner with the business to  provide expertise and advice in defining ambitious and differentiated strategic goals which maximize business value and achieve ESG ambitions.
  • Thought partner with cross-functional initiative owners to pressure-test action plans to achieve strategic goals, incl. proactively identifying resource constraints and interlinks, complex issues and risks.
  • Identify barriers for execution and work collaboratively with initiative owners to define potential remediation actions; track progress on remediation and provide support where needed.
  • Foster collaborative and strong relationships with key stakeholders across corporate, commercial, research and development, product development and supply chain, insights and analytics, and financial teams to ensure strategic alignment and drive effective, cohesive, and complementary ESG initiatives aligned with ESG goals and objectives.
  • Support in advising Leadership on global best practices, risks and opportunities with respect to ESG through business intelligence, continuous monitoring and analyzing strategies, trends, policies and programs.
  • Drive desired outcomes by coordinating and working effectively both within the ESG team and across the functional stakeholders.
  • Prepare comprehensive ESG progress reports for functional and company leadership and ESG Council
  • Ensure adherence to ESG reporting standards and regulatory requirements, by staying updated on ESG trends and best practices within the life sciences industry and beyond.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum of 12 years of experience in management consulting or project management at a large organization, agency, or publicly traded company, or a combination of education and professional experience that would provide an equivalent career foundation.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Demonstrated track record of driving successful cross-functional project execution in a global, matrixed organization with a preference on candidate with experience in ESG or sustainability initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of ESG principles, landscape, reporting frameworks, and industry trends.
  • Experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical industries a plus.
  • Superior written, verbal, editing, and interpersonal communications skills, including hands-on experience writing leadership materials.
  • Exceptional influencing and collaborative skills; ability to interact effectively with colleagues and counterparts at all levels of the company, both within the Corporate Affairs team and across the broader organization.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to leverage data for decision-making, keen attention to detail.
