The Johns Hopkins University Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and independent individual to provide operational oversight to the department’s Design Studio (DS) and associated laboratories/spaces to include Clark Hall, Design Studios, machine shop, biological labs, and wet labs, as a Senior Laboratory Coordinator.
The position will work closely with the DS Manager to maintain a state-of–the–art design facility and lab spaces, assisting in the mentoring of student design teams in the development of prototypes, working closely with faculty and staff regarding BME courses, events, meetings, and workshops, as well as providing additional technical knowledge regarding a wide variety of manufacturing processes and techniques.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for overall operational elements of the Design Studio(DS).
- Oversee specifications, design, implementation, and modification of projects related to the DS.
- Manage the use of space and equipment.
- Develop procedures, schedules and checklists for efficient and safe use of equipment.
- Set-up and maintain equipment in DS spaces for course use to include operation, trouble shooting, and preventative maintenance of DS equipment.
- Oversight of building including maintenance including and/or repair of facilities within Clark Hall; managing the building access permissions; and operation, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment related to this specialty.
- Conduct annual Laboratory safety inspections to comply with the JHU Health, Safety and Environment guidelines.
- Responsible for compliance and audit preparation of assigned laboratory area for IRB, ACUC, CLIA, CAP, The Joint Commission, and/or other regulatory reviews. Coordinates and maintains all regulatory binders, logs and audits.
- Ordering of supplies and acquisition of equipment and procurement of service contracts.
- Responsible for monitoring the adherence to JHU and departmental policies and procedures.
- Provide technical prototyping, testing and associated training to support student design projects. Specifically training students on DS equipment and utilization of resources.
- Work includes assisting DS Manager and faculty with development of workshops for prototyping and testing modalities.
- Activities include will require proficiency in design software such as Solidworks, Corel Draw, VCarve, etc.
- Assist in training students in lab and shop safety.
- Work with faculty to set up and take down biological-based lab experiments, including mammalian cell culture and bacterial cell culture.
- Responsible for the efficient utilization of assigned resources and for planning future research and development, equipment and space.
- Develops capital and operating budget requirements designed to meet current and future needs of the laboratories.
- Collaborates with BME financial staff in the review, purchasing, and tracking of expenditure activity for design team accounts.
- Purchase general materials and supplies for the DS, instructional labs, and associated spaces.
- Maintain tool and material inventory in the DS and associated spaces.
- Assist DS Manager with student workers including recommendations for hiring, terminating and performance. Approximately 6 part-time students per year.
Work Environment While performing the duties of this job
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods.
- Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus.
- The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides.
- Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory workstations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
- Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
Laboratory Environment
- Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed.
- Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.
