Job Summary:
The Senior Hardware Quality Engineer (HQE) is responsible for assuring that hardware products and associated test equipment meet their contractual, company, and regulatory quality requirements within schedule and cost. The HQE will provide support for multiple airborne programs providing expertise, guidance and management of issues encountered during fabrication which may include new or re-engineered fabrication defects, unit troubleshooting, teardowns, re-installation of electrical and mechanical hardware, unit testing and unit acceptance.
The HQE is responsible for planning and implementing key controls and processes to assure quality is built-in. They will ensure proper implementation of root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions, continuous improvement, and compliance with RTX policies and procedures.
Role Duties and Responsibilities:
- Use of critical thinking, resources and methods to improve product design, minimize inspection, resolve manufacturing defects/problems, and support process improvements
- Conduct timely identification, segregation, disposition, correction and closure of nonconforming material, including Material Review Board (MRB) activities
- Perform Process Failure Modes & Effects (PFMEA) Analysis on processes and products to prevent product defects and mitigate risk
- Lead and support root cause and corrective action activities
- Support hardware quality drawing & design reviews
- Act on all applicable material, product, and equipment alerts to prevent impact to product reliability using the nonconformance and/or purge process
- Assure special test equipment (STE) and tooling comply with approved assembly and tooling drawings, assembly instructions, test procedures and metrology requirements
- Manage dropped and damaged hardware processing and incident reporting
- Support program, corporate and third-party audits
Required Skills:
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and 5 years related professional experience in Engineering, Quality and/or Manufacturing
- Experience with AS9100 quality management systems
- Experience working corrective actions on factory non-conformances or hardware defects
- Experience with project management or risk mitigation
- Experience with leading or supporting root cause and corrective action activities
- Experience working in factory operations, or manufacturing, or assembly environments
- An active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Desired Skills:
- Experience and knowledge working with AS9145, Advanced Program Quality Planning (APQP) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)
- Familiar with lean manufacturing concepts such as DFMA, Input-output diagrams, and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with suppliers, customers, and government representatives
- Experience with initial and delta First Article Inspection (FAI) on internally manufactured items
- Experience with Material Review Board (MRB) and Corrective Action Board (CAB) participation
- Experience with metrology, measurement instruments and practices
- Experience working with external suppliers and mechanical inspection techniques
- Experience with Six Sigma methodologies, Lean skills, or other effective project management technique
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Advanced Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to operate under minimal supervision
