Summary
<span class="fr-mk" style="display: none;"> </span>The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy) is seeking a qualified traffic safety instructor to join the Traffic Safety Unit. This position plays a vital role in promoting highway safety through law enforcement education and training. Duties include the following:
Performs instructional duties in assigned courses, including all traffic safety subjects for basic law enforcement training, such as basic traffic law, traffic direction, traffic stops, collision investigation and reporting, DUI detection, standardized field sobriety testing (SFST), and practical exercises.
Conducts classroom and hands-on instruction in traffic safety topics for basic and selected advanced law enforcement training programs. Assists other South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy units with law enforcement training as needed.
Maintains all required instructor certifications and position-related requirements in a timely and accurate manner, including instructor activity reports, PowerDMS policy reviews, ACADIS training, and other required certifications and training.
Researches, develops, and updates lesson plans, instructional materials, and practical exercises to reflect current laws, statistical trends, and best practices in traffic safety and crash investigation.
Serves as a subject matter expert in traffic safety by providing technical guidance and support to Academy staff and partner agencies as appropriate.
Performs law enforcement duties during critical incidents, including natural disasters and man-made emergencies, as assigned.
Examples of duties
Minimum requirements:
- High school diploma and eight (8) years of law enforcement experience or
- Associate degree and six (6) years of law enforcement experience or
- Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of law enforcement experience and
- Experience must include two (2) years of road experience and
- Currently certified S.C. Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) or
- Currently a certified LEO in another ***jurisdiction with full powers of arrest with the ability to become an S.C. LEO.
- Must obtain BID and SFST Instructor certifications within one (1) year of hire.
Salary:
- The hiring salary starts at $60,696 and goes up commensurate with LEO instructional experience.
Qualifications
- Two (2) years of experience writing lesson plans and/or developing training material.
- Basic Instructor Development (BID) and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Instructor certification
Supplemental information
- Ability to teach all traffic safety-related courses and curriculum.
- Ability to obtain a CDL class B driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements within one year of hire.
- Extensive knowledge of contemporary LE principles, practices, techniques, tactics, and methods.
- Able to research and develop comprehensive lesson plans in assigned training areas.
- Responsible for controlling all training delivery in assigned areas of instruction.
- Adheres to safety and testing procedures.
- Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively; analyze problems and make appropriate recommendations.
- Able to coordinate the work of students and enforce student discipline in a fair but firm manner.
- Able to work effectively under limited supervision using individual discretion and prudent judgment.
- Work in a professional manner with others in a team environment to achieve common goals and objectives.
