The Radiology Department intends to hire for one Weekend Option position at either the Sonographer classification (Pay Grade 5) or Senior Sonographer (Pay Grade 7), based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. The University of Iowa Health Care department of Radiology is seeking a Senior Sonographer under limited supervision; perform ultrasound procedures in multiple specialty areas, utilizing advanced technology/equipment, explain examination procedures to patients and monitor their well-being.  Instruct students and staff on examination and equipment operations. 

Duties Include:

  • Perform complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler.
  • Provide instruction to trainees, students and other medical staff on operation and safety precautions.
  • Consult with the interpreting physician regarding the ultrasound exam findings.
  • Document exam information as required by departmental standards
  • Evaluate images of ultrasound exams and determine if the exam is of diagnostic quality.
  • Assist with and provide ultrasound guidance for intraoperative and invasive procedures.
  • Provide information and instructions to patient, patient’s family or others, regarding the nature of requested diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
  • Perform patient care techniques including skin preparation, vital sign monitoring and recording, and basic life support; prepare and administer contrast material to patients.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Instruct and evaluate sonography students on the operation of diagnostic equipment.
  • Instruct medical residents on operation of diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintain quality control with the ultrasound section in accordance with accepted departmental standards.
  • Determine equipment malfunctions and contact repair service.
  • Perform equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.

The Department of Radiology will be filling this position at one of two levels. The Sonographer classification salary is 5, and the Senior Sonographer classification salary is 7. You must indicate in your cover letter the level of classification (Sonographer and/or Senior Sonographer) you wish to be considered for or indicate both. See required qualifications for additional information.
