Patient Care Assistant, Emergency Department, Part-time, Third Shift

UC Health is hiring a Patient Care Assistant for the emergency department for the night shift at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Unit Details:  

• UC Medical Center is the region’s only adult Level I trauma center and Cincinnati’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center certified by the Joint Commission.

• Our newly renovated department brings state-of-the-art equipment, SRU rooms and trauma bays, behavioral health pods, a more manageable nursing station, and a larger waiting room.  

Patient Population (Clinical Only)

• Engages in age- and population-appropriate communication.
• Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development milestones.
• Provides clear instructions to patients and families regarding treatment.
• Involves family/guardian in patient assessment, care, and follow-up.
• Identifies physical or behavioral health limitations and intervenes appropriately.
• Plans and delivers care that reflects cultural, religious, and psychological needs.
• Recognizes and reports signs of abuse or neglect.

Patient Care

• Provides culturally based and age-specific patient care.
• Measures and records vital signs, I&O, height/weight, and skin condition.
• Collects routine specimens (urine, sputum, etc.).
• Assists with ADLs, hygiene, positioning, ambulation, and comfort measures.
• Changes linens, empties drainage, and disposes of bodily waste per policy.
• Uses patient care equipment safely (lifts, scales, oxygen, etc.).
• Assists with feeding, meal setup, and calorie counts.
• Supports respiratory care (turning, coughing, deep breathing, O₂ setup).
• Performs EKGs, blood glucose checks, and mobile care phlebotomy (as trained).
• Performs post-mortem care.

Communication

• Reports patient observations to RN timely and accurately.
• Orients patients and visitors to the unit; updates white boards.
• Documents patient data, treatments, and procedures.
• Answers call lights promptly and courteously.
• Assists with reception and phone duties as assigned.

Environment

• Maintains a clean, safe, and organized patient care environment.
• Removes and cleans equipment when not in use.
• Stocks and reorders supply as needed.
• Reports maintenance or safety concerns.

Teamwork

• Participates in patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
• Demonstrates cooperation, respect, and teamwork to support quality care.
• Performs other duties as delegated.

Safety Measures

• Ensures patient identification, call light access, and safety equipment use.
• Uses proper body mechanics and universal precautions.
• Follows hospital and unit safety procedures at all times.

Qualifications 

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

Minimum: 0–6 months required.

Preferred: 1–2 years of related experience.

Required Skills & Knowledge:

Completion of one of the following:

State Tested Nursing Aide (STNA) certification preferred.

OR 

Current RN student with successful completion of a clinical rotation

If none of the above, must successfully complete UC Health PCA competency training and orientation before providing patient care.

Must maintain AHA CPR and patient care skills competency.
