Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the management and the daily operations of the following positions:  HIM Specialist I, HIM Specialist II, HIM Specialist, III, and Senior HIM Specialist
  • Supervises employees to include daily organizing, staffing, monitoring and controlling of day-to-day activities in each area.
  • Provide organizational guidance, coverage or assistance with work as necessary to keep area current and to meet established turnaround times in all areas of processing. 
  • Conducts and documents quality control audits for each area of responsibility.  Reports problem areas identified and discusses with individuals involved
  • Orients and trains new employees in areas of responsibility, performs 90 day and annual evaluations; keeps job procedures and appraisal tools up-to-date; sets measurable goals with staff input
  • Documents discussions, counseling, extra project assignments, etc. for use in completing appraisals. Clearly explains Departmental/Hospital policies to each new employee
  • Reviews status with the Assistant Director prior to initiation of any informal or formal counseling steps. Uniformly applies personnel policies, demonstrates loyalty to the management team, presents new procedures/policies to employees in a positive, timely manner
  • Continually evaluates the flow of work in each area, identifies opportunities for improvement, works with other staff as indicated to develop and implement new systems
  • Plans and coordinates in service education programs in cooperation with other department supervisors, to be held 6 times yearly which may include Hospital sponsored educational programs
  • Completes monthly audits for each assigned staff.  Establishes Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for each position and monitors for compliance.  Provides hands-on support when needed to maintain current status in all areas supervised
  • Organizes work to maximize efficiency and to complete work on time
  • Performs productive activities consistently during work schedule

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Graduate of an approved school for Health Information Management with current credential of RHIA or RHIT
  • A minimum of four years experience in a HIM Department required.  Prefer one year of management experience
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively in person and via telephone, displays interpersonal skills in working with others
  • If credentialed, must maintain continuing education hours in accordance with AHIMA guidelines to keep licensure current
